Default Best means of travel?

Having disagreed over this with MC (IIRC) I drew up a mental list
assuming time and cost not issues.

1.Ship/boat (by a nautical mile) but not a cruise or out of
sight of land for ages.
2.Walk
3.Car
4.Run
5.Taxi
6.Cycle (if roads quiet)
7.Train
8.Plane (private self drive plane would be number 2)
9.Bus/coach
10.Cycle (if roads busy or if cycle is unicycle)

That might be true for urban visits, but my recent trip to the
Hebrides would not have worked by any other method than car,
where the concept of finding a parking place is unknown!
That goes for most "wilderness" type trips I do.

(I included "running" from memory, its no longer much of a
practical option for me, either! But not a bad way to travel a
shortish distance).

I missed the point there, didn't I. Its supposed to be what I
enjoy, not what's practical. Start again, I enjoy the act of
driving (on non urban roads) and the privacy and ability to carry
lots of luggage without aggravation. Also the ability to turn off
when and where I fancy. A boat is even better because you can
look around without stopping first, walk around.....and drink :-)
(I find privacy a non issue on boats as there always seems to be
lots of space, unlike say a train or bus where someone comes and
sits next to you and plays a walkman).

Opinions differ, of course, but I would move train well up the list. I'm
not young enough to walk too far, much less run, nor agile enough to
bike, and as I normally travel alone, I have NO interest in driving so I
can't sightsee and have to spend unconscionable amounts of time looking
for a parking place--after which I may have to walk considerable
distances anyway. The bus is for extending my train trips and the taxi
for when there is no bus and I need to go further than I wish to walk.
The ship within sight of land I'm trying next fall 8-)

If you get elite status on Northwest, and start receiving unlimited
automatic free First Class upgrades on domestic flights, then #8 starts
feeling more like #1.

Wouldn't this depend on where one is traveling, and from where?
Also, unless you're Bill Gates or Warren Buffet, chances are, cost is a
very important factor, and so too probably is time.

1. private plane
2. airline
3. private yacht
4. rail
5. ferry/cruise ship
6. car (if I could drive, which I can't)
7. bus/coach
8. bicycle
9. walk (wouldn't consider it for long distance
Z. taxi (wouldn't consider it unless I missed the train - which I've been
known to do ...)

It's really hard to beat the train, when everything goes smoothly. I had
to take a return journey from Manchester to Newcastle yesterday on
business, and the train in both directions wasn't too full. I got a
great deal of work done in preparation for the examining I'm doing today
at college, and managed to have a couple of drinks on the way back down!
Also, the scenery was mostly wonderful, and the carriage was decently
air conditioned, but not too much. I think it would be nothing short of
masochistic to have driven the same journey!

Any of the means you list could be the best under certain
circumstances.

The best WAY to travel is to hitch-hike. You learn more in a few
minutes in the privacy of a local's home (car) that most books will
ever provide.

For those who are concerned about parking and traffic, second best is
via motorcycle.

city to city let the train take the strain.

press send too quickly. In the days when annual season ticket
holders got cheap intercity tickets we went to Bath, York etc for
daytrips. Worked OK until trains played up on York return and we
didnt get back till the next day having had to go via west coast!

I'm sure it would, but the £1 Ryan flights don't tend to do that
sort of thing!

I walked from London to the source of the Thames, any other
method of "transport" would have made the enterprise pointless!

except bus? I cant think when I might prefer a bus (except the
obvious one of no alternative).

You are, of course, wrong. Shame on you for trying to mislead the public.

1. Bicycle (if roads busy, which is fun)
2. Bicycle (if roads not busy, which is boring)
3. Walk
4. Local/commuter train
5. Long-distance train
6. Fly
76. Bus/coach
648. Taxi
14580. Car
