Berlin is incredibly exciting. I'd also get into the countryside, do the
Rhine Gorge, or the Black Forest, or the Harz Mountains, or the Alps somewhere.
Please don't jus tdo Bavaria in Germany. There is so much more.

Where do you think Stuttgart is?
I'm also intrigued by those non-Bavarian, German Alps.

The German Alps are mainly in Bavaria and that's only one of the
reason why it is Germany's most beautiful region.
I don't think Berlin is too exciting...rather grey and a bit dirty.

Yeah, West Berlin was dog-shit city, at least it was when I lived there in
'91.

Lots of lovely castles along there, too. I prefer Schwaben to Bayern,
myself.

German Alps are completely in Bayern.
Schwaben is a part of Bayern. One of 7 districts.

Eh? I don't get you .
Is this a case of "Finali ze drem vill kum tru?" Freistaat Bayern taking
taking the US as its role-model in foreign affairs?

True, but we were really talking about Swabia rather than the governmental
district of Schwaben, as such.

I lived in Stuttgart for a couple of years in the early 1970s. It's a
pretty city, but I found it rather boring, and went to Munich as often
as possible. For the visitor, there is the ballet, a tour of an auto
factory, a trip to the Black Forest (much overrated) or Baden-Baden,
not much else. The other four cities on the list have much more to
offer a tourist.....

I found Stuttgart nicer than Munich. At least the Cannstadter Wasen and
Frühlingsfest are still *more* authentic than the awful Oktoberfest in
Munich. Munich hasn't got much more.
I agree the Black Forest is overrated, did you ever read Jerome K. Jerome's
"Three men on a Bummel" ? There's a wonderful bit givign you a vivid
insight into the Swabian mentality. (The only place I lived where you had
to clean the public street, path and curbs yourself. Every week.
"Kehrwoche").
And Vienna has....? Um, ballet. An oil refinery, a waste-recycling power
station. And a funny council-house block designed by an "architect" on some
sort of organinc drugs.
Other than that it has an area of tourist-trap wine bars - even the locals
don't fall for it unless they're trying to climb the local politico-social
ladder.

This sounds like a pretty boring Eiffeltower-type round trip: the
only attraction of these cities is the high cost of living. The Romania
recommendation sounds much more exciting, a totally different world, sort of
travelling back in time. If you really want to stick round Western European
places, I would recommend the youth hostels of Mürren or Grindelwald in the
Bernese Oberland (Switzerland). Very scenic and great places to meet people
from allover the world.
