Default Basque ETA in Spain-should I be concerned?

I am traveling to Spain in September. Should I be alarmed at ETA's recent
promises of bombings? Any areas to stay away from? Any specific advice?

You already seem alarmed. Stay away from bombing areas, and please
tell us where they are so we can tell the police and stay away too...

Now seriously, no need to worry about ETA more than about pickpockets
or a traffic accident. Relax and enjoy your stay in Spain.

Visited Spain in May 2002. Beautiful country!! ETA is no reason ot stay
away. There was a couple car bombings the night before I was to arrive in
Madrid, but this probably had to do more with the big football match that
night with Real Madrid.

Following up to Fred

The risk is low compared with things like car crashes, very low.
Usually ETA have attacked Spanish rather than tourist targets, this
may be changing, your guess is as good as mine.

ETA has never really targeted foreigners specifically (though they do
occasionally plant a bomb or two in Spanish Mediterranean resort
towns, the so-called "summer campaign"); they mainly go after
low-level government officials and police officers. Nor do all that
many bombings occur over the course of any given year outside the
Basque country, which is where most of the violence occurs. So while
your chances of being injured or killed in an attack is certainly not
zero, it is very low. I'd would treat it like any other possible
hazard.
