Barcelona
I have 5 nights in May -- am interested in Gaudi and in visiting the Guggenheim in
Bilbao and probably Montserrat -- someone else recommended Morello Thinking of staying 3 nights in Barcelona -- what is a good location to be within walking distance of interesting sites? Looking for something comfortable mid range. Am thinking of renting a car for the last two nights and driving to Montserrat, Bilbao and other spots. Does anyone have suggestions for some interesting towns to hit in a couple of leisurely days. Any favorite small interesting spots to spend the night -- with atmosphere. We want to end close enough to the airport in Barcelona to be able to drive in the day of our noon flight back. How to make the most out of a brief sojourn -- a bit of the city and a bit of the countryside? |
Re: Barcelona
Hi
Barcelona is within easy reach of the Costa Brava. Girona has a fascinating medieval centre with arabic and roman remains. It is on the way to Andorra and Figueras too. The Dali museum at Figueras and Dali's house at Port Legat may be of interest. Nearby is Empuria Brava, with extensive remains of a Phoenician / Greek / Roman port. Re: Barcelona
Your interests and places mentioned are good. For other things in the area: Figueras
(the crazy, but wonderful Dal=EE museum); Poblet (another monastery, if you want another one), and, if it is not too far, Carcasonne. Re: Barcelona
I have just returned from Barca and stayed in the Hotel Taber. Rooms clean although
small but great location. You'll have to excuse my ignorance but I am not into Art. The hotel is almost opposite a famous gallery (One with all the wires on top of the building), 100 meters away from the Gaudi house with the dragon on the roof, 30 mins walk from the Unfinished cathedral, 10 mins walk from Gaudi's other house with the strange chimneys (I really should have read that guide book the I got before I went). Also the hotel is 10 mins from the city centre (la Ramblas). If you want 5* Luxury then look else where, if you are after a clean room with a bed that won't break the bank then it will serve you well. I don't think it's a feasible driving excursion for just two days. I'd recommend driving to other places in Catalonia like Tarragona, Girona, Montserrat or the Poblet Monastery instead. Re: Barcelona
It is not worth trying to make it from Barcelona to Bilbao in one day. Go to
www.theaa.com or www.viamichelin.com to see. "hamilton" <[email protected]> wrote in message news:[email protected]... > In article <[email protected]>, [email protected]. (José M. Re: Barcelona
I would consider the city center to be north of the popular Ramblas and in the placa
Catalunya. If we are thinking of the same museum, I think your hotel is even more centrally located than you do. Barcelona is in Catalunya. Bilbao is just west of San Sebastian in the Basque Country. There's a good deal to see inbetween and it would be a shame to drive straight through anyway. We made that trip a couple of years ago and enjoyed it very much. We made it with four night's stop overs along the way between Barcelona and San Sebastian and we could have spent more time sightseeing along the way and could have meandered further in the Pyrenees as well. -- Food/Wine/Travel website with a French focus <http://www.worldtable.com> Paris, July 2001 <http://www.worldtable.com/reports/paris.jul.2001.html> France/food - eGullet <http://www.egullet.com/ib3/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi |
