Baggage Question

I am flying with my family from New York to Chennai,India with a stop
over at Stockholm two days. I am flying Malaysia airline. Can I check
my luggage directly to India or do I have to get the luggage at
Stockholm, go through the custom and recheck on the way out. If the
later is the case, is there a place to leave the luggage at the
Arlanda airport and how much does it costs, or do i have to schelp the
luggage all over stockholm. Boy will I give the LAPP with their
costume a run for the money( see "Stockholm in december" question)

Except that the airline has the option to redirect it at random.

Which has nothing at all to do with the question the OP
posted! SFAIK, everywhere you go but to the U.S., you are
allowed to check your luggage through to your final
destination. It is only due to the oddities of U.S. air
terminals that you must claim your luggage at first
touchdown here, regardless of destination.

LOL! I well remember the plight of a couple of fellow
tourgroup members, my first trip to Europe. We all left Los
Angeles on the same KLM flight, bound for Prague, with a
change at Schipol. Everyone else reclaimed their luggage in
Prague without incident. Theirs traveled by way of North
Africa. ;-(

If you wait for two days before going on to India, your luggage will sit
in unclaimed luggage in India for those two days. But before anyone
picks it up and takes it to unclaimed luggage, it will first go round
and round on the luggage carousel which is just asking for it to be
taken by someone else. It's happened to me- and I was only 20 minutes
later than the others claiming thier luggage.

LOL

and the colleague, who flew with KLM for a golfing week in Portugal.
His golf clubs never got there and they were returned to him a week
after he got back to NL.

If you are flying on the same ticket you will be able to check your baggage
all the way through, as is the case with most (all?) countries except the
United States.

Nor has your answer !

Incorrect, anywhere you switch to domestic air travel
there's a good possibility you'll have to clear customs.
When flying to Darwin via Sydney I had to colelct my bags
and clear customs at SYD

Not true and the OP specified a 2 DAY stopover, I dont
think interline agreements cover that.

Not with a 2 day stopover you cant. He'll have to pick up his luggage
and take it to the hotel he's staying at.

But you can't have your luggage through checked this way with a two day
stopover.
It's checked to Stockholm and must be claimed there.

Sorry in this case the luggage must be checked and claimed in Stockholm.
There's a manual left luggage service in Terminal 5 level 1," CIVAS
Terminalservice".
Cost for one piece of luggage two days is 80SEK (11USD). Sounds a
reasonable price, I paid more than so for a few hours service at Waterloo
stn London.

Your luggage is checked through to your finale destination. You semi claim
your luggage. You are connected with the luggage in a secure area, and go
through customs and immigration. Then the airline gets your baggage and
hopefully loads it on the correct plane. How else are they going to know
you came in from a foreign country? And not all airports are international
airports. If not international, there is no customs or immigration.

Precisely the point I was making, if you'll take the trouble
to read my post!
