We stayed in the Sorbonne/Luxembourg Gardens area. Felt very safe day
and night, if a bit noisy.

Not racist, just telling the truth. They were not Muslim youth rioting?

Doesn't matter. It was a lot more violent, for a start. What was the
death toll of the one in the early 90s again, post Rodney King? Several
dozen IIRC.

Not to mention Detroit, or Birmingham ...
Admittedly, the UK seems to have managed it well after Brixton.
Besides, equating the Nov 2005 riots mith Muslims is plain stupid and
derogatory.

Hm... there have been various riots since, if not as bad as Brixon or
Toxteth- such as those in Oldham, Bradford and Birmingham (UK!). What
the rioters have in common is that they belong to disaffected and often
socially excluded groups.

BTW Stan, that reminds me, I never did thank you for sending the CD. (I
was mid-move at the time, and forgot I'm afraid.) It was terrific, I
really enjoyed it.

Avoid the Rue de Runge, it leads to Place de Merde.

Broadly speaking, most of central Paris (i.e. within the
Priphrique) is absurdly safe by the standards of US cities.

I go to Paris frequently and feel more than comfortable wandering
around after dark pretty much anywhere in the 20 arrondissements, with
the possible exception of the 10e (around the Gare du Nord) and the 1e
in the immediate vicinity of Les Halles (the subway station in
particular).

That said, long ago, my girlfriend was attacked at 7pm on a summer's
evening a stone's throw from the Arc de Triomphe, so you never know...
    :(

She had a lucky escape by the way as the attacker dragged her around a
corner and straight in front of a vanload of CRS. They really kicked
the shit out of the guy, blood everywhere, and she was more upset at
that than at the original assault.

You'll have a great visit - enjoy Paris !

Let's hope he learned his lesson. The area is one of the best guarded in Paris; he was
really stupid and got what was coming to him.

I love happy endings. :)

They were not Muslim immigrants? Seems as if your reporters are confused
then.
