Backpacking in Europe
 

I plan to backpack in European countries after July this year for 4-5
months.
May you tell me:
1. Can I travel there in that period of time with USD1000?
2. Is it easy/possible to find a job for backpackers nowadays, thus, I
can finance myself on my way?
3. Taking into account my finance situation and travel time, where are
the places you recommand me to backpack to?

890 EUR: very unlikely. Even if this should only cover the costs of
transportation.

IMO not legally. (if you're a US-citizen)

Your garden? Sorry, 5 months on tour with just 890 EUR is impossible. Food
for that period in the supermarket is very likely to be more expensive.

No. You're doing extremely good if you can live a tourist life (which
includes lots of expensive accomodation and transfers) on USD 1.000 in one
month. 5 months on 1000 dollars is out of the question.

This depends on a lot of things. Where do you want to go to, what can you
do, etc. Remember that in most countries you can't work legally on a
tourist visa, unless you're a resident (EU resident for EU countries).

The cheap places :). Parts of Southern Europe (Portugal, Southern Italy,
Greece), and portions of Eastern Europe. But you need more money anyway.

That works out at about 7 euros a day. If your idea of fun is sleeping
rough, hitch-hiking from one place to the next and living on Big Macs for
4-5 months, then you should manage it with no problem. Otherwise forget it.

That's only two or three Big Macs a day! (depending on the country!)

I am on a 1500 budget for 2 weeks in Euro. but $500 of that is plane
ticket.

then you have the expensive of trains, buses, place to sleep, FOOD,
and other expensive that may arrive.

Europe isn't cheap. and not with the Euro at .91 dollars per euro.

this is very unrecommended.

1 month you may be able to do it. 2 is pushing it.
4 to 5 is not possible in my opinion..


figure how much you pay here in the US to live for a month.
then add in extra for the unexpected.

I travel on the cheap, staying in hostels largely. I've
managed well on about what you have allocated, but
it has not included transportation between cities. Some
days I have spent as little as $40, other days up to $75.

Anyone planning a long stay would surely wish to travel
about and would have to figure bus or train fare as well
as lodging and food. Then there is local transportation
within a city as well. And admissions to museums and such.

The original poster obviously has not done his homework.

If you take the 5 month figure, that means $6.67 a day, not even close
to what you're saying.

I was replying not to the original poster but to one who said
he budgeted about $1000 for two weeks. Geez!

You can't even live four months at home on that amount of money; how do
you expect to live cheaper in another country?

In any case, after the first 90 days, you'll be an illegal immigrant.

The original poster asked about spending 4-5 months on $1000. I agree
that $40 a day is reasonable, but 4 months for $1000 is about $7 a day.
That's not even remotely possible in the cheapest of European countries.

We're spending 3 weeks in Italy in May, and budgeting 1800 euros for the
trip, and that's cutting it very fine (with researched
hostel/admission/train expenses). Not including airfare, though (and CDN
dollars, to add to the pain)

Of course it is not, and I didn't suggest it was. I was replying to a
post answering the original post, for Pete's sake. I thought that
was obvious as I inlcuded the post I was replying to in my post.
In fact it is right above. See it? The man said he allocated about
$1,000 for two weeks and I agreed. You are the second person
to tell me this. I guess no one reads an entire post.

If you mean by this:

Is tranportation from where I live to Europe and back available for
USD1000 at that time of year, then maybe if you'd tell us where you're
from the people in the newsgroup can help you...

If you mean:

Can I stay in Europe on USD1000 that whole time the answer is: No.
