Default Avoiding Versailles crowds

Do the really nasty crowds only exist in the summer - June, July, and
August - or is the problem year-round? How bad are the shoulder
months, May & September?

In March the crowds were moderate but significant. We waited about 2-3
hours for the start of the tour. Got there ~11 tour at 2 or 2:30

There are quite a few people there all year long, but I haven't found
the crowds to be that bad. The wait is mostly for the tours, and mostly
because some of them are guided tours that take place only at certain
times (especially those in English).

The gardens are never crowded, since they are huge.

Was it worth it? I can't imagine waiting 2-3 hours for something. Maybe
I'm just too much into instant gratification, but it would have to be
something pretty special for me to do that:-)

It's definitely not worth a wait of 2-3 hours, unless your lifelong
dream is to see Versailles and you know exactly what to expect.

I usually advise clients that Versailles may not even be worth visiting,
as it is quite overrated.

It wasn't really a wait. We spent the time exploring the gardens. And
had a quick snack. The uncontrolled areas of Versailles can absorb
whatever time you have in a day.

You really are a bundle of fun.

On my first visit to France, Versailles impressed me more than
anything else I visited and it hadn't even been restored then.

In Nov, a couple 3 years ago, no wait, no people.

I'm paid to help them enjoy their trip. In practical terms, Versailles
just isn't that interesting to that many people. A lot of people go
there because they've been told to go there.

Yes, but Paris rarely disappoints.

Neither my wife nor I can think of anybody, who has been disappointed
by Versailles.

Is the disappointment limited to Americans. I find it hard to
understand. American tourists flock to Hearst Castle in large numbers
and it is nothing compared to Versailles. Not that I was disappointed
by Hearst Castle.

You should have let Mxmanic show you around. Make an appointment with
him next time you are in Paris.

Couldn't you even get into the grounds?
A bunch of us went around the grounds once in winter on a Sunday after
it had snowed. It was magic, the grounds were near empty. We kept
hearing bursts of automatic fire, eventually we found a rifle range on
the left hand side of the park. There was a sign saying it was
absolutely forbidden to fire bursts with automatic weapons, they were
all firing bursts.

Will he let me share his ticket to get on the Metro ?

Yes but it wasn't the same when we were expecting to go inside, especially
as it was raining.
