We interviewed a guy via telecon last week. It was great - we could
zoom in on his face to watch his nervous tics while we asked him nasty
questions.

Sadistically,

Not really, text conferences come ahead of voice conferences in their
productivity, both are a long way below f2f's though.

In your humble opinion. My opinion and experience seems to be very
different to yours.

If it was weekly with the same people, then maybe telephone would be
better. It certainly doesn't work as well as face to face for the kind
of thing I do.

It was better and it wasn't always the same people.

It would do you out of all your train trips too :-)

OTOH I found video conferencing just a distraction.

Teleconferencing was very popular immediately after 9/11 .

we cant all move to the centre though, can we? I assume you didn't
have your old place blown up and turned into a nature reserve so
someone else is now commuting from there. The commuting problem needs
addressing by new approaches to zoning so people are travelling both
ways. I'm not sure about higher density living? Possibly London has
been allowed to get too big, I think.

I don't think you can overestimate the value of establishing a proper
relationship, of course in some cases you find you hate each other!

Those things are more of a waste of time than a normal meeting. Why
don't people realise that no real decisions ever happen in meetings,
and that by not participating simply makes you appear too important to
participate.

The trick is to find out who is actually going to attend, and deal
with whoever isn't.

Don't tell anyone I told you that!

True- I find arts-related meetings very 'personal'- I'd find it hard to
do on the phone.

I get people to rearrange meetings around my public transport schedule.
I never get hassle for it- indeed, quite the opposite. Jim should maybe
move into the arts! :)

Technical meetings are simple to do on the phone.

Or just only agree to meet people less important than me - which might
be good, as then I'd probably have no meetings at all. Fortunately
the meeting has been moved to the evil place with the killer mozzies
so I'll just not turn up, even better!

Jim.
