Does Austria still shut down on Sundays ? I was in Vienna a few years ago
and everything (almost) stopped on Sunday - even car parks were closed.
<topic change> I hope to be in Salzburg sometime next week - any suggestions
about parking? Is there a park and ride type scheme?? (or park and walk!) I
have only been as a passenger before and even with a local driver it seemed
hard work!
TIA
Les J.

Yes. For park and ride lots and parking garages see

The shops in the station(s) open and unlike in Germany where there are
only rip-off shops in stations that you only buy from if really desperate,
in Vienna there are normal shops selling everyday things at normal prices.
Don't think this is true of other towns though.

Yes, everything stops in Salzburg on Sunday. However, on Sunday you have
High Masses with choir and orchestra in the Cathedral and
Kapuzinerkirche, so you cannot really tell you have nothing to do.
There are some park and ride schemes. However, I am tired to shuttle
to/from the parkings near the highway and since several years I use the
central parkings in the mountains. There is a way to avoid their
extortionate rates: if you buy anything from some selected shops in the
center, you can have your ticket punched and a cheaper rate applied. As
I usually buy a lot of newspapers from the newspaper shop in the ground
corridor of Parkhaus B, I am often entitled to the reduced rates.
