Default Austria Snubs Starbucks

Starbucks finds little favor in nation that loves tradition

VIENNA, AUSTRIA - It seemed so brash and, to many Viennese, so American when
Starbucks arrived three years ago bearing Frappuccinos and caramel
macchiatos into this proud capital of coffeehouse culture.

I had looked forward, during our trip last year, to patronizing
Vienna's famed coffeehouses. I ended up avoiding them, due to the
"oxygen supply severely compromised by cigarette smoke," as the article
puts it. I felt truly stupid going to Starbucks in Vienna, but it was
the only place where I could enjoy a cup of coffee (and the traditional
free newspapers) and still be able to breathe. So here's to
globalization - at least there's one place in traditional Vienna where
a sinus-suffering person can have coffee without getting sick.

By the way, you don't have to have medical problems to not want to
breathe smoke.

And globalization isn't all bad. Presumably it will result in European
culture making it to the U.S. as well. (Though we Americans probably
won't appreciate it.)

Well, a coffee house where people spend time reading papers, etc, is an
European custom, that's come to the US and bounced back.

Is anyone surprised? Viennese coffee has a reputation for
being among the best in the world - why would any
self-respecting Austrian go to Starbucks, instead? (I do
give Starbucks credit for improving the quality of
restaurant coffee in the U.S., but that used to be so
abysmally bad that almost ANY change would be an improvement!)

Only if you define "coffee" more loosely than I do! (I have
sinus problems, too, and am allergic to tobacco smoke - but
for a cup of decent coffee, I'm willing to suffer for half
an hour or so.)

but Starbucks is not decent coffee by most European standards.

If you are allergic to tobacco, you will suffer for more than half an
hour.

yuuu huuuu anyone noticed that in italy there are NO starbucks....
not even one single small store...
and that any good-sense-of-taste european refers to american/english coffe
as "dirty water"...
portuguese, brazilian and italians know how a real coffee must be!
short and strong with a "round" and smooth taste! to be drinked with a
couple of sips.
starbucks coffee is far far away from a good espresso...
....and all that fancy cappuccini mixed with only-god-knows-what..... i saw
once... PAPAYA CAPPUCCINO......AWWWW YUCK!!

starbucks will never conquer europe!!
ITALIAN ESPRESSO FOREVER!!!

GO AUSTRIA GO!!!

Exactly the point I was making! (I think you misread my
post.) I don't patronize Starbuck's in the U.S. (where its
coffee is marginally better than the average
restaurant/"coffee shop"). Why on EARTH would I patronize
it in Vienna, of all places?

Actually not - as soon as I get into clear air, again, the
stuffiness goes away. (The "half hour" referred to the
minimum length of time required to savor a proper cup of
coffee.)

I wouldn't be so optimistic. A few years ago almost all the
coffee bars in Scotland were run by Italians selling Italian-
style coffee. Now there are Starbucks everywhere. Why should
Italy itself be any different?

Remember that Starbucks can only survive if it has customers. If the
chain is doing well in certain European countries, it is simply because
there are a lot of citizens of those countries who like Starbucks. It
doesn't make much sense to say that nobody likes Starbucks if the chain
is making a ton of money, because it cannot make money unless a lot of
people like it. Denying the reality serves no purpose.

Reminds me of the Will Rogers saying: "Nobody goes to that restaurant
any more. It's too crowded."

It looks like a very "long" coffee. You almost deserve the Starbucks :-)
