Austria by the sea?

Along the Mediterranean sea --- are there any quiet, clean places where
a campervan might stay, in or out of a campground, for a few months
during the winter?
For instance --- I really enjoyed the nice little towns in Austria.
Everything was clean and well-maintained, and the people seemed happier
than most. I also liked Switzerland, and appreciated the order and
tolerance there.
However, now it is winter, and those places are too cold. I am
presently stopped on the south coast of France, near Nice. The weather
is all right, but the place, in general, is far too busy and built-up
for me. Here, it is also very difficult to drive my van anywhere,
considering the traffic, difficult access, theft problems, etc. I can
use the public transportation here, but that is more difficult and
time-consuming than just using my van.
So I ask --- do you know of a nice place by the sea that has some
beauty and serenity, also where I can park my van for awhile without
wondering about theft? I do not mean that it has to be perfect, but
simply a decent, quiet place with fairly trustworthy people, and
without hordes of tourists.
I would also like to be near (within 20 km) of a nice small town for
supplies and for variety.
I am willing to drive anywhere around the Mediterranean sea. My best
guess, so far, is that I might find this in Greece. However, before I
set forth, I wonder what some more experienced person might think..

Have you considered the Slovene coastline.
Not sure about the theft issue (though I doubt it is any
worse than many of the alternatives) but I think it ticks
the rest of the boxes.

It's an awful long way to Greece from France, and you have the Balkans
nations to deal with. I guess you could load your campervan onto a
ferry and get there that way.
If you think the south of France is built up, forget Italy. You need
to go a long way south before you will find what you want.
What about Spain?

It is a long way to go, but I think you might find what you are looking
for in Greece. The people there are genuinely hospitable and friendly
towards foreigners. Problems of theft and general security are almost
non-existent if you avoid the tourist areas and big cities.
I go to Greece every year, and last May went by car for the first time
from England through France and Italy. I very much enjoyed the journey
which took about a week, but when I arrived in Greece I breathed a sigh
of relief, and finally felt relaxed and at home.
Greece has (I think) the longest coastline in Europe and there are
literally thousands of places by the sea that are undeveloped and very
attractive.

You'll probably get the best winter weather in southern Spain.
I've always liked the small town of Tarifa (just west of Gib).
It's also fairly used to its many surfing visitors and, therefore, 'campers'
of various types.

I initially thought this was a thread about global warming. (smile)
However. I have seen camper vans wintering in Andalucia (east of Motril). It
is far from being the most interesting of coastlines though.
Good luck.

The other end of the French Med coast - around Narbonne. It is an area where
the French holiday and places like Narbonne Plage have large collections of
holiday homes that are unoccupied much of the year, without problems.
Outside large conurbations and tourist areas, France has very low crime
rates. Most of the holday areas also have motor caravan parking areas, some
of which are free in the winter.

The western part of the Var departement around Toulon is much more quiet
than the Nice region.
You could try La Londe des Maures, or Saint Cyr les Lecques.

The Atlantic coast south of Bordeaux (Arcachon, Cap Breton) has a mild
climate in winter, is very peaceful and quiet.

You could also try Croatia (Krk island).

There is some nice, relatively undeveloped coastline in Italy between
Pesaro and Fano. There are also lots of campgrounds right on the
shore. When I say "undeveloped" I don't mean it's in a totally natural
state; there is a railroad and a national highway fairly near the
shore. However, there are no hotels and few stores for considerable
stretches.
South of Ancona, at the foot of Mount Conero, are several pretty small
towns in a fairly undeveloped state. The scenery here is very nice,
but I don't know what the campground situation is.
You could check these places out, and if they don't meet your
requirements, they are both close to Ancona and the ferry that will
take you to Greece.

Lovely town -- I spent several nights on the roof of our small hotel
watching ships navigate the Strait of Gibraltar and seeing the lights come
on in Africa (highly recommended with a bottle of red wine). If I remember
correctly, that's the spot where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet.
Really windy, though. (tops for the windsurfers; for the rest of us, hang on
to your hat)
Happy New Year everyone,

Yep - not quite the narrowest part where the Atlantic & Med meet, but near
enough and a very evocative spot.
And, yep, the winds are the disadvantage! That's why Europe's largest (I
think) windfarm is nearby!
There's a small ferry to Tangiers from there, too - an instant culture clash
for those who don't know North Africa!
