Hi,
Totally confused when I read of all this island hopping, all I want to plan
is 1 week with 2 days in athens then 4 or 5 days on a smallish Greek Island
. I do not want a hussle and bussle of night life, but really some fairly
peaceful place, with maybe a boat trip or two, and an island to explore,
So - not Rhodes, Crete, Mykonos.
Somebody mentioned that Kefalonia may be ok, but not sure if it is easily
reachable from Athens by Ferry ...
Any help would be appreciated.

Take a map of the Cyclades, close your eyes and point your finger.
Go there, it'll be fine. Just avoid one of these:

or Ios, Paros, Santorini.

Kefalonia is in the Ionian Islands, i.e. Adriatic Sea. From Athens you want
something in the Aegean.

I thoroughly enjoyed Naxos when I was there in early June. We saw lots of
families there enjoying the beaches. One very nice thing about the beaches on
Naxos is that the water is so shallow for such a great distance from shore that
it's much safer than a more typical beach where the water quickly becomes very
deep. I believe a ferry from Piraeus to Naxos is something like 6 hours, but
you can easily fly from Athens and save yourself all the trouble of going to
Piraeus in the first place. I would think Piraeus would be quite a pain with
children in tow.

"My wife and I just returned from an extended trip of the nature that
you speak. Only one hour from Piraeus by Catamaran or Bydrofoil is
Poros. We went on to Paros and Antiparos but any of these islands
would suffice for a vacationing family. There are sailing vessels on
each island to take you on tours, local buses to do the same. Poros
was quite lovely as was the B&B we stayed at, largely attended by UK
citizens. Scenery, a monastery, lovely harbor and great restaurants.
Enjoy! Biil

Sounds like a decription of Lesvos, except that it's fairly big (but I
don't see how size would matter). Lesvos is very peaceful, very
beautiful, has almost no hussle and bustle, and there is a lot to
explore.

I would choose a flight instead of the ferry.

We've always booked Greek Island flights on the big airfare sites-
expedia, travelocity etc.
Do book in advance though.
