Default Assisi - St. Francis sights

We're going on a church pilgrimage to Assisi, and will be seeing the Basilica.
We have some time free in Assisi also, and I am thinking of visiting some
of the other Francis sights. I've seen several maps, but without
distances. How far is Santa Chiara to the Basilica of St. Francis. I know
the original cross that sparked Francis' conversion is there. Is San
Damiano a significant distance? Anything else people know that might
be included?

Thanks,
Julie

Santa Chiara is perhaps 10 min walk from St Francis' Basilica (1 km). San
Damiano is further 30 min, down the hill (just over 2 km). There is also the
Hermitage, Eremo delle Carceri, with the cave of St Francis and place of
retreat for early Franciscans. It's about 4 km to the east of centre, about
an hour's stroll through olive and cypress groves, with good views. lastly
there is Santa Maria degli Angeli, about 5 km away (railway station is
there). Inside rather gaudy building is Porziuncola, where Francis dedicated
Clare. There is a frequent bus service from Assisi. Inside Assisi, the walk
to the citadel (Rocca) rewards with a fine view of the surrounding plains.

these things are all VERY close together -- it is a tiny town -- Santa
Chiara is sort of in the middle of town and the Bassilica a few blocks
on the edge of town -- but easy stroll

They do vespers at San Damiano every night -- well worth attending --
the church is very evocative -- it is a long walk down and a longer
seeming walk back up the hill to the town -- but easily manageable

As said elsewhere, all those sites are close and easy to visit. A bit
further is Verna, a shrine in the mountain pinewoods north of Sansepolcro.
It is the site where he received the stigmata. These days many go there,
park and climb the road to the top which is where he stayed. It is a
beautiful place where you hear the wind sighing through the pines and see a
view that looks like the top of the world.
It's quite near to Anghiari, too, which is a very pretty hilltown. Not far
away is Caprese Michelangelo, where you know who was born.
The main thing to "get" up there in all those places is the extraordinary
beauty of the country and the unique light, which can inspire anything.

If you are unable to walk to San Damiano or the Eremo, there are very
inexpensive taxis in Assisi. You can often find one below the Basilica,
beside Santa Chiara, and in the parking lot that has the escalator. The
Eremo is also a popular spot for taxi drivers looking to pick up a fare.
