I live within an easy driving distance of Assisi, so I'm afraid I
can't recommend a hotel. However, I wanted to alert you that it's in
Umbria, not Tuscany.

I stayed in May in the Hotel San Pietro in Assisi. It was not terribly
expensive (Rack Rate for the room I was in was aobut $80 a night) and
very conveniently located near the Basilica, assuming that is important.

Sorry, sent that too fast. The rooms were simple but comfortable, baths
adequate and even including a bidet. Breakfast was average, but more than
the usual roll that you get in Italy. I would not eat dinner in the restaurant
(we had to because we were in a group, and that was where they had dinner, but
it was one of the worst we had in all of Italy.)
OUr room had a lovely little balcony looking out onto the Umbrian (not Tuscan!) landscape.
You can see a pic of that on my web page, below.

Re: Assisi
A friend and I stayed in the Hotel San Rufino ** in 1998 (the year after
the last major earth quake?).
The hotel looked like it had just been renovated. We were made very welcome
and there were no problems with the accommodation. Seem to remember it was
good value - about 45 euros equivalent back then. They were bike friendly
then too - let us keep the bikes behind the sofa in reception ;-))
Info on the hotel here...

Didn't eat in the hotel, as we basically never do - much nicer to get out
and about for breakfast/dinner I think.
Also stayed in the Hotel Italia * one year. VERY basic, but if all you want
is a bed and a shower, it cost me about £15 which for a town like Assisi I
thought was pretty good! It has a much nicer position than the San Rufino
though.
Hope this helps...
Allan.
