Anyone done the river cruise from Moscow to St.Petersburg ?

or is it better the other way ?
will the food and water be edible or should I stick to the Vodka ?

I know about the Red Square in Moscow and the Hermitage in
St.Petersburg but what else should I see ?

See all the stations on the circle line in Moscow, and that's about
it. Moscow is a pretty shitty city. St Peter is great however. It's
just great in every sense.

My wife went to Russia a couple of years back and was tearing out her hair
at the visa process. At one point she assumed the money she was wiring to
the visa service would just fall into an abyss of conmen. However, it was
just part of a process and it all came together in the end.

Russia is a topsy-turvy place. They discourage tourism, and you are
expected to be happy someone let you buy something. Amongst other
peculiarities there's the absense of station signs on the metro and
the weighing of food in restaurants!

Isn't this one of the reasons for Ukraine disposing of many of its complex
entry rules ... trying to pull the frayed tourism rug from under Russia?

Yes, my mother did. She disliked it - wanted to learn about modern
Russia and social conditions, the people, etc. The whole cruise was
about things that had happened 200 years ago--palaces, cathedrals,
actors dressed up in the styles of 200 years ago and dancing, and the
like. Nothing on meeting modern people, getting a feel for the Russia
of today.

I've worked on cruises on the Rhine, Moselle, Danube and Netherlands
Inland Waterways, and if you want to make an adventure of things, my
recommendation would be to think extremely carefully (and do some
research beforehand) about the excursions and activities on offer from
the tour operator.

On the Danube (for example) the ships I worked on dock in Vienna for 2
nights. Nothing to stop anyone from hopping on the underground railway
and doing their own thing. There's a whole day in Buadpest, too. An
afternoon and evening in Bratislava as well.

Check out the itinerary your tour company offers. If you have the
opportunity of doing your own thing - do it!

"Optional Excursions are not compulsory." !!

I used to tell my passengers, too, that just because the cruise
offered full board, it didn't mean that set meals were compulsory,
either. Get off the ship, go into town, find a restaurant and do your
own thing.

The people who didn't follow the herd mentality often had a much more
enjoyable time than those who did.

Can't hop off in Russia. They had a group visa (my mother thought
they'd get individual visas), couldn't separate from the group.

Parenthetically, she was a guide on Rhine cruises during her student
days--would make up things (That's where mad prince Falafel leapt to
his death for love...) and the tourists loved her, big tips. Until the
owner took the cruise one day--she got fired.

Russia's glory days have long passed. After one of the dumbest, and
most widely implemented concepts in the last century (that 'c' thing),
now they are trying to catch up, whilst not letting go of the dream
that could've been.

That is one reason the glorious 200 year old history is celebrated,
coz the last 100 weren't pretty.
