Default Anyone been to Italy (Pisa/Milan/Rome etc)using Ryanair?

I would like to go to Italy. Ryanair have some reasonable offers.

I am having a bit of a nightmare, I am not too bothered where we go.
Ideally Rome but I have read that the trains are ok in Italy so maybe
arriving at Milan and then onto Rome would be an option.

But what I am stuck with is how I can figure out to get to Hotels from
any of these destinations. I know that Ryanair does not always fly
close the city so what are my options and how can I figure out cost ?

Taxi
Train
Coach
Walking ?

Ryanair does, indeed, often use minor airports but as long as you know
this in advance it shouldn't pose too much of a problem. FWIW, at Pisa
they use the main airport, which is a short train ride from the city
centre. I haven't used Ryan to either Rome or Milan so I can't comment on
those offhand.

And yes, the Italian rail system is good. But still, it's quite a big
country so if you want to go to Rome, try to fly to Rome rather than Milan
unless the price difference is really dramatic.

Get the RyanAir flight to Pisa, a bus leaves from just outside the
airport and will take you to Lucca - lovely city, stay there a week,
get bus back, go home. Best holiday ever!

I've never flown into Pisa but I understand that it has a very convenient
train connection to Florence. From the station in Florence it is an easy
walk to the center of the city and many hotels.

Ryan flys into Rome's Ciampino airport which is actually closer to the city
but does not have a direct train connection. There is a direct bus to Roma
Termini station, and from there you can walk to many hotels or take the
Metro to anywhere in the city. In theory, at Ciampino you can even take a
city but to the Metro station about 3 km away, or to the train station on
the far side of the airport, but I don't think many people do that.

I might be inclined to fly an "open jaw" into Pisa, train to Florence, train
to Rome, bus to Ciampino and back home, wherever that is.

I reccomend not flying into Milan Bergamo BGY if you want to go to
Milan, as it's miles away, close to Bergamo.

In fact I recommend not going to Milan, and going to gorgeous Bergamo
instead!

Ryanairs destinations section gives details of to and from the airport,
if the is not good regular bus or train link , there is often a
dedicated coach transfer or check the airport website, making sure its
the correct airport
Rome is a long way from Milan

Pisa airport is well connected to Florence; there is both a train
service (sometimes with a change in Pisa centrale, sometimes direct), as
well as a Terravision bus connecting to Florence S. Maria Novella
Station.

As the Florence airport is quite busy and has a short runway limiting
the size of airplanes, often Pisa airport is considered as a good
alternative to Florence; I never flew Ryanair, but I used often Pisa
airport. On the contrary, I would not recommend flying to Bergamo,
unless you are bound to the adjoining area.

Never flown Ryanair, and cannot comment on Pisa and Rome, but can give
some advice on Milan.

Ryanair flies to Orio al Serio (BGY) airport, which they and somebody
else try to rename "Milano Bergamo International", but is not close to
Milan but to Bergamo. It is not the only company flying there, also full
cost companies have some flights from there. I have sometimes done
Milan-Munich from there ...

the fact is that Milan had (has) a nice "city" airport close to the city
(just on the edge of the communal area, urban bus to centre at 1 euro,
coach to station for a little more), but at some time the powers
that be decided that lots of flights had to be relocated to Malpensa,
and that Malpensa should become a hub. Malpensa is 45 km west of Milan,
and only after the relocation they managed to start a train link (40 min
but runs only every 30 min and does not connect with mainline). Orio al
Serio (so called by the river Serio, but since the word means also
"serious", and "sul serio" means "seriously" there are some low cost
companies flying from Linate which make a pun of this "Milano sul serio,
non Orio al Serio !") ... is sort of 45 km east of Milan.

So going there is like going to old Malpensa, at least one hour or other
unpredictable time by coach along a trafficked motorway. The only ways
we used it, it was because there are no flights left Milan-Munich, and
since we live and work in the eastern part of Milan it was simpler for
my colleague to pick me up and go there by car in the early morning and
return in the late evening (not rush hour, and in the opposite direction
of commuter flow).

Said that, the airport is nice and new, and you can get info on their
web site http://www.sacbo.it/Airpor/portalPro...p?languageID=2

Essentially there are coach services connecting to Milan Central
Station, from where you can take long distance trains to anywhere.

There is also a local bus connecting to Bergamo rail and bus station,
which is 4-5 km from there. But the rail station is a sort of rundown
commuter station with only regional links to Milan (2 lines), Brescia
and Lecco. Bus station, also relatively rundown, serves the mountain
valleys around Bergamo.

Anyhow the old "high" historical centre of Bergamo is definitely worth a
visit.

Last summer I stayed in the hotel St. Lucia, which is very near the
main Rome train station and costs very little. It was recommended by
DFM, who also posts in this news group. It is clean and comfortable,
with decent bathrooms, it even has air conditioning, although at this
time of the year that is irrelevant. The owners (husband and wife) are
very nice, although they don't speak much English. The train station
area is not the nicest of neighborhoods, but during the day and early
evening, it's perfectly safe. I'm a single woman and I stayed there
for several days in August, alone and with my daughter. When I was
alone, I stayed in a single room, which wasn't as nice as the double
room I stayed in with my daughter.

The single room, which cost 45 eruos a night last July, was long and
narrow, and the floor tiles were old and stained. (However, the floor
was very clean.) The bathroom was small and the whole room became a
shower stall. (Move the toilet paper before taking a shower.) The
double room, which cost 65 euros a night, was spacious and had a
modern bathroom with enclosed shower.

The Rome metro/subway only has two lines. Large parts of the city are not
served. Better to rely on buses or, best of all, stay in the historic
center, where you can walk to almost everything.

The room includes a seagull, if the site's anything to go by!

A damn good value hotel. I've sure stayed in worse in Rome at a much
higher cost.
