Gare du Nord, will take a train to Grenoble from there. Would like to
spend teh night in Paris. Any recommendation for a cheap hotel near

How cheap? The Hotel du Nord advertises heavily and is very close. I
recall seeing several low-cost hotels just outside the Gare du Nord.
I stayed at the Hotel Appia la Fayette and Hotel Ibis, and was happy
with both experiences.

Here is Venere's 10th arrondisement listing--you can use the map to plot
different hotels and their distance from Gare du Nord (hover your mouse over
each starred hotel on the map), have a look at prices (I think those are for
doubles, but you can specify your dates and room needs and get better
details) and read reviews from people who have stayed at each property:

Hotel Williams Opera (3 Rue Mayran PARIS, FR 75009) is a 10 minute walk
from Gare du Nord. It's smallish, basic but clean and neat. A room was
about 99 euros a night when I stayed a few years ago.

Having once arrive in Paris at Gare du Nord, I don't remember it being a
particularly attractive part of the city. Perhaps jet lag and heavy rain
influenced my opinion. At any rate, it is right on a Metro line, so you
have the option of grabbing a hotel in a less desirable part of the city
and running back and forth by metro, or you can hop on a metro to a hotel
in a nice part of the city and then back to Gare du Nord for your
departure.

Libertel Suede is a decent place about 1 1/2 blocks from Gare du Nord. Walk
down the street that has the Hotel Terminus on the corner. Turn Left at the
first main street. It is on the left.

Your train to Grenoble will be leaving from Gare de Lyon rather Gare
du Nord, no ? If that's the case, you might prefer to stay near the
Gare de Lyon. Try the Grand Hotel de France, 12 rue de Lyon (it lists
the metro stop as Bastille, but it's really closer to Gare de Lyon).
