Default Antwerp again.

Is the Kaiserlei Street (near the Centraal Station) better
or as good as, the old town for hotels. We shall be using
the station for trips to Brugges and Ghent, so thought being
near the station would have its advantages,if the area is
OK.

The area is the worst area of the city. It is dirty, seedy, and not as safe
as other areas. I would still advise to stay in Oostende,Brugge,or Ghent
instead, but if your heart is set on Antwerp then stay away from the train
station.

Good luck,
Bill

Or if you wish to stay near a Belgian train station and in a nice
neighborhood consider Brussels. There are several business class hotels at
the Grasmarkt, a block from Central Station, which also means less than 5
minutes walk to the Great Market in one direction and less than 10 minutes
to the royal art museums in another, as well as lots of dining and shopping.

I've stayed there a couple of times (most recently in May, 2004) and find it
a great location from which to visit Antwerp, Ghent and Brugge--and I would
add Mechelen with its fine cathedral and St. Rumbold's Tower--as well as
offering a direct rail link from Central Station to the airport should that
matter to you and easy access to the TGV express train that gets you to
Lille in 40 minutes (and then on to Paris) should you wish to see a bit of
France.

It might be less safe than other areas, but it's still quite safe anyway.

If you take the usual precautions (i.e. look after your belongings), you
probably won't get any problems.

It's not the most pretty part of town though.
