Amsterdam May 2006

Was in Amsterdam here in May 2006.
Coffeeshops and Window shopping all over.
Made a homepage with some pics for another
purpose - but it might be of some interest to
rec.travel.europe readers as well?

Amsterdam May 2006 pictures:
http://www.geocities.com/sheepxpower.../amsterdam.htm

if that doesn't work then try:
file://mineting.125mb.com/Amsterdam/amsterdam.htm

Of course we are interested in trip pictures.

The second is nicer, not having ads along the side, but the URL is:

http://mineting.125mb.com/Amsterdam/amsterdam.htm

Did Marco recover just fine? Or did he stay behind?

Nahh, I don't agree with that.

Please try out the 125mb site - if the first site doesn't work:
http://mineting.125mb.com/Amsterdam/amsterdam.htm

I have now checked out again
http://www.geocities.com/sheepxpower.../amsterdam.htm
from two different logins - no broken links, and all pictures available.
But I do realize that connections to free sites can be shaky.

We roamed the streets of Amsterdam on May 19, 20 and 21. Besides the
rain and wind, it is a wonderful city to walk around.

I was thinking about something. They say the largest crime in
Amsterdam is bicycle theft. People say they pay more for the lock than
the bicycle. Wouldn't it be better if everyone took the locks off all
the bicycles and when you needed a ride just take one. I'd bet it
would all work out in the end.

Nobody would ever repair a bicycle. And who would ever buy a new bicycle
in the first place?

It's been tried in Amsterdam and it failed the bikes were stolen.

A word of warning to anybody borrowing a free bike in the Hoge Veluwe
National Park. If you leave a borrowed bike unattended don't expect it
to be still there when you return.

That was tried somewhere - Cambridge (England), I think - and abandoned
because so many people took the bikes home permanently!

Copenhagen has municipal bikes. I didn't get to use one, but they are said to
be uncovetably ugly, heavy and unwieldy to discourage theft.

As an imminent immigrant to the flattest land of all I certainly
concur. However, we neglected to borrow the Copenhagen bikes because
the Carlsberg brewery has insolently hidden itself up a hill. Then we
didn't go to the brewery anyway, but there you go.

I have since recalled that Berlin (which is pretty flat too) also
operates a bike scheme, which is tied to your mobile phone in ways I
didn't have occasion to figure out.

On flat ground it doesn't really matter how good the bike is. They
help you get around!

But for practical purposes impossible to get one. And if you see one it is
there as it has been damaged. Never did I see a usable one available.

Aarhus started them in May 2005. So when I was there in June of 2005 I had
no problem finding one in working order.

In a city, there is a great advantage to those big bulky bikes. I rented one
for the week in Berlin. At first I was disappointed, after my nice bike at
home, but those big old bikes can really take curbs. You can't hurt them. If
you're going to commute in the city, that's probably what you really need.
Otherwise you'll be changing tires regularly.

I didn't use the Berlin DB bikes, but saw plenty of them around the city.
Evidently you call in and get a code to unlock it, and leave it wherever you
are when done. You're billed by how long you have it.

It seems to be more common to steal somebody else's in NL.

There's always something nice about having a crappy, but simple and
mechanically sound bike locked up on the street. You can be sure it
will be last one to be stolen, and the first one to get you home
safely!

If you gotta get home, you gotta get home!
