Default Aegean Islands in October??

I would like to see as many Aegean islands as reasonably possible in 10 - 12
days sometime in October 2004, but would like to take inter-island ferries
rather than a package cruise liner to save money. I do not speak any Greek, but
have driven all over Italy and Spain several times and am not afraid to go off
the beaten path. I would like to hear from people who have taken such a trip to
find out about inter-island ferry schedules, expense, whether reservations are
necessary for such ferries or island hotels, what the weather might be like in
October, places not to miss seeing and to avoid, etc.

Please reply to: [email protected]. Efaristo poli.

You definitely don't need to speek any Greek to get around the islands in the
Aegean. And in October you most certainly will not need reservations because
high season will be long over by then. In fact, the ferry schedule by then
might be significantly curtailed.

As far as places not to miss, if this is your first trip to the Greek Islands
then definitely put Santorini on your list. There is no place like it anywhere
else on Earth. You can read about my trip to Santorini here:
http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/71f79/65ca8/

It's hard to tell a person exactly where to go because there are so many
options. For instance, you could work your way all the way over to Samos, which
is just off the Turkish coast, and then take a trip to Turkey to see Ephesus,
one of the most famous and best preserved historical sites in the world. Or of
course there's Crete, which is like a whole country of its own.

I'd recommend getting a good tourist book for the Greek Islands. I the DK
Eyewitness guide and the Lonely Planet guide. DK is especially useful because
of all the photos. Also check out these helpful web sites:

http://www.islandstrolling.com/info/..._to_greece.htm

The Greek Islands are a wonderful experience that you'll never forget. Enjoy
your trip!

Ferries are the "real thing" anyway.

Ferry schedules:
http://www.greekferries.gr/
However, do not necessarily rely on these schedules. They may turn out to
be untrue because of changes not reflected on the website, because not all
ferries are reported anyway, because ferries can be late (often many
hours), or because they don't run at all for weather reasons. The actual
schedules will be on display at ticket agencies in Piraeus and in all
harbours of islands. These are reliable (save for lateness and weather).
Just go with the flow and don't plan ahead too much, except don't plan your
last leg back to Athens from a very remote island when you have a plane to
catch. There are plenty of ferries to all destination all during tourist
season. October is shoulder season, but you should be OK.

Ferry srices:
Between 15 and 50 EUR per leg as a rough guide, depending on length of
trip, class of boat and seat.

Ferry reservations:
You buy your ticket a day in advance at one of the travel agencies in the
harbour. Reservation as such is not done, except if you wish a private
cabin.

Accom reservations:
Not necessary. There's plenty of free accomodation on all islands. Do not
limit yourself to islands, private rooms (b&b style, but usually without
the breakfast) are cheaper and usually very fine. People offer their rooms
at the harbours. If that occurs to you, don't be suspicious, it's all fine.

Weather:
Probably still sunny and warm, but cooler in the evenings. Some time during
late October/early November autumn sets in with rain and wind.

We've had two recent mid-October hols in Crete and Rhodes and have always
been able to eat outside in the evenings.
