Hello All,
I'll be having a 23hr flight stopover in Amsterdam in August (Arriving
at Saturday 11AM and leaving Sunday at 10AM) and I'd like to ask you
if you can recommend me a nice and quiet hotel (2 persons).
We would like to be able to see some of the tourist attractions
however I am not sure if that is going to be possible (I am not sure
how far is the Schiphol Airport from the city). Should we book a room
next to the airport, or can we book something closer to the city?
I appreciate your advice,
Vasa

Schiphol is 20 mins by train from Amsterdam Central, so it's perfectly
feasible to go into the city and spend the night there. You've got
enough time to at least do some wandering and tram/canal rides, and/or
maybe one of the major museums on the Saturday afternoon, plus a good
dinner somewhere.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is one of the easiest in the world in terms of
transport to the city. For a few euros you can buy a train ticket and the
train station is right at the airport terminal (you don't even go outside).
It is an easy train ride of 20 minutes to Amsterdam Central Station.
Never stay at the airport if you have to chance to go into the city.

Absolutely no reason to get a hotel near the airport. The train leaves 4-5
times per hour, costs just a few euro, and takes 19 minutes.
You should get a hotel in the center of the city and enjoy yourselves.

The Ibis hotel is adjacent to Centraal Station (where the train from Schipol
arrives). As you exit the station it will be a short walk to your right. It is
moderately priced and very central. You can walk or take a short tram ride to
almost any of Amsterdams sights Also it saves you a cab ride to other
moderately priced hotels and you wont have to worry about getting a cab back
from your hotel to the station..

To make it even more convenient, Ibis will provide bus transportation
round-trip to Schiphol. (At least they did a couple of years ago.)

Hi,
the Ibis Centraal is just about perfect
if you like a little color in an older building you might try the hotel
nikolaas(sp) at Spui 1a (about **)... it's convenient in a neat building.
or go to www.hotelamsterdam.nl and visite the Hotel Amsterdam - De Roode
leeuw... this is like on top of Dam Square... very convenient to lots of
stuff... with a good restaurant IN the hotel... tram stop right outside
the door... so you could take the train to centraal station, and any
tram that goes down damrak (main street from centraal station to dam
square) and get out right in front.
close to the cafe de dam (a very small pub I like)... walk out the front
door of de roode leeuw catecorner across dam square down the main
drag... it's right THERE.
this place got on The List based on a trip in '92 where a buddy and I
picked this place twice as "this place looks like a good place to get a
beer" and decided that if we picked it "randomly" twice it must really
be a good place for a beer.

Hello Vasa,
Amsterdam is a very nice city to visit. you will have a lot of things
to see and to feel. it is pity you only have short time to be there.
I would suggest you to take a boat-trip in Amsterdam, by this way you
can have a quick look about Amsterdam. it start somewhere around the
centre station. you can ask when you arrive the Amsterdam centre
station . Most Dutch people are very friendly and speak good English.
Good luck and have fun!
