Default Advice on Driving Calais to Dordogne

Hi,

Can anyone help with the following info.

1. Roughly speaking what is a good route. (We are going in August).
2. How long would it take to drive.
3. If we decided to stop off overnight where is a nice place (about halfway
down) with reasonable hotels.
4. How much is unleaded petrol in France.
5. How much are the toll roads.
6. Are there any recommendations other than AA Recovery Service insurance
when driving in France.

TIA

I try to avoid the Peripherique around Paris, so I would follow A16
Boulogne - Rouen, N138 Le Mans - Tours. From there, depending on
whereabounts in Dordogne you are heading for, A10 to Bordeaux, or A10 to
Poitiers, N10 to Angouleme, D939 to Pergueux, or N147 to Limoges, A20/N20 to
Brive and Cahors. If you don't mind the Peripherique, take A10/A71/A20 to
Limoges and N21 Perigueux.

The quickest route via Paris is just short of 500 miles, for which I'd allow
8 hours driving. The first route, with several non-autoroute sections, would
take around 10 hours.

Somewhere south of Paris, like Tours or Orleans. Both have plenty of cheap
motels in the suburbs, and family-run hotels in the centre. I'd book in
advance for August.
    > 4. How much is unleaded petrol in France.
Just over a euro/l on autoroutes, around 0.90 euro (64p) at hypermarkets.
    > 5. How much are the toll roads.
For the second route via Paris, it's around 33 euro one-way.

Your holiday insurance may offer an add-on cover for breakdown. Mondial
Assistance, Green Flag among others have cheaper cover.

There are many online resources for driving advice, routes, etc. Michelin
is at www.viamichelin.com, Mappy at www.mappy.co.uk and travel sites such as
www.expedia.com and www.travelocity.com. There are lots of others.

Try the via Michelin route planner. It will give you a choice of routes,
rather optimistic driving times, places with hotels and restaurants and the
total cost of the tolls.
