Accomodations for Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen and maybe Bergen as well in a couple
 

Hi there, we're looking at 8 nights, probably 2 in Oslo, 2 in
Copenhagen and 4 in Stockholm (or something like that). Does anyone
have any ideas for nice-ish hotels or B&Bs in those cities that won't
break us? I know that's a bit vague... I'm not sure of rates as of
yet, but any early recommendations would be great. thanks!!

The first question is when. You get much better rates in these
towns in the summer - which ends in three weeks,and at weekends
the rest of the year.

I've never seen any mention of B&Bs in these towns. It would be
interesting to know if they exist (I suppose that this depends
upon one's definition of B&Bs).

What sort of money are you thinking of? About 600 Kr per
room cheap season 900 Kr peak season is likely to be as
good as you'll get in a hotel. The premium for 'nice' is
often not very much

There most certainly are B and Bs in these towns. I have stayed in
them. Just do a search for bed and breakfast copenhagen, stockholm,
etc. They usually run from about 300 Swedish krona on up. I am, in
fact, staying in one near the airport in Copenhagen next month for 250
DKr a night.

thanks for all the replies!! it's in a couple of weeks from now. the
B&Bs look cheaper, at least for copenhagen so far... we're definitely
hoping for under 900 for all three countries. i know the money isn't
the same, so say under £35 UK per night, if possible... the websites
look good but, doesn't matter though, i'm wondering if anyone has any
specific recommendations? we're really just looking for central,
clean, and very basic with a big breakfast!! ;-)

I have been there a couple of years ago. A nice place, close to Oslo city
centre (10 min by foot, bus stop in the street).

Norway is an expensive country. But here, the prices are reasonable.
The owners, Ragnar and Frode are very friendly.
You can use a kitchen.
They have friends in Bergen who also propose accomodation for travellers and
students.

In Stockholm the best breakfast buffet of anyplace anywhere is at the
Nordic Sea. And if a summer weekend, the room rates are reasonable. On my
recent trip to Sweden my 440 SEK single room was the cheapest of the trip.
Now there was a catch for this price: no window. And you have to book on

As a general rule, you will find B and Bs in Scandinavia very good.
It's just part of their ethic. I wouldn't worry about any of them
quality wise and would pick based first on location (nearness to
public transport) and then price

In Oslo, I stayed at the Hotell Astoria: http://www.thonhotels.com/astoria

It's only a short walk from the station, and wasn't too bad on price, IIRC.
Very comfortable and the breakfasts were great.

At the time, they had some discount card that you could use in other hotels
within their chain, which gave you a free night after six stays ... but I think
the chain had a different name back then, so maybe it doesn't exist anymore.

ok, so once again thanks very much for the replies!! i guess we're
just incredibly naive or something and waited too long, but we're
having a hard time finding anything close to the city centres for less
than £100 (uk pounds).

A few places recommend just showing up at the tourist offices and
they'll put us in a good place at a possibly discounted rate? In most
countries this would be a bad idea, but in Scandinavia it's a good
idea? Can this be true? Are we risking our banks if we just show up in
Oslo next Tuesday without a booking?

And then there's the trains. Anyone have experience with the trains?
It looks like Oslo to Copenhagen to Stockholm and back to Oslo is
going to cost us over £400?? Anyone have any thoughts about this?
Maybe we're just too poor to travel there... Our flight is only £40
all in...

That's not a terrible price- they're expensive countries.

Trains are not cheap. Although it's not as pleasant a mode of transport,
flights in Scandinavia can work out cheaper.

You've not picked the best part of Europe for a budget trip, I'm afraid.

In the 80s, I usually paid around £250 (not adjusted for inflation!) to
fly from Glasgow to Bergen (usually changing at Stavanger.)

Yes, it's true. These cities have tourist offices that have private
rooms in reserve for those arriving without them. They aren't
normally rented out but are used as an emergency backup. Trains are
expensive in Scandinavia but buses aren't and you might get a good
deal on a boat which is a drinking experience in itself. Meet
Scandinavians at their loosest. I checked Eurolines, for example,
from Copenhagen to Oslo on August 13th and it was 340 Dkr per person.

It is compared to the 250 Dkr I am paying per night in Copenhagen in
August.

Not as cheap as buses or usually boats.

Actually, it varies by country in Scandinavia, Sweden being the
cheapest of the lot. There are lots of tricks to keep your cost down.

It's 207 DKR on the same day for a one-way flight.
