I alway recommend the City Hotel (79-85 euros single, 95-115 double)
near our apartment when we have visitors we can't house. It is on a
quiet street a 5-10 minute walk from the very center of Stuttgart, the
Schlossplatz, and a walkable distance to anywhere in the center. It is
a block away from stops for 4 U-bahns (U-5,U-6,U-7, U-15) at the
Olgaeck stop and an additional two blocks from 3 other U-bahn lines
(U-1,U-2,U-4) at the largest U-bahn station, Charlottenplatz. It also
has free parking and is just three quick stops on the first 4 mentioned
U-bahns from the Hauptbahnhof (main train station). There are several
other hotels nearby (a block away) which are probably good but I cannot
personally recommend; Wirt am Berg (50-70 single, 85-95 double);
Espenlaub (29-61 single, 39-79 double) and Alex 30 Hostel (20-70 per
person). All provide free breakfast exceptt possibly Alex 30. Hotel
rooms are bookable through www.stuttgart-tourist.de or you can deal
with the hotels directly if you wish, but the price should be the same.

If you are going to the Cannstatter Volksfest, Europe's second largest
beer festival, you can take the U-bahn from Olgaeck to Charlottenplatz
(probably just as easy to walk) and catch the special U-11 direct to
the fairgrounds, or the U-1 or U-2 to Mercedesstrasse which is a short
block away from the west entrance.

As I live in Stuttgart, if you have any other questions I would be
happy to answer them.

You didn't mention any price range, and I though that I would mention a
small hotel with themed rooms in the old part of town (Bohnenviertel)-
Der Zauberlehrling (Sorcerer's Apprentice), again bookable through the
Stuttgart tourist office. 110-180 euros single, 240-280 euros double
including breakfast. Their restaurant is our first choice for fine
dining in Stuttgart, if you eat there you will have a very enjoyable
meal. This hotel is in the same area previously mentioned, but one
block on the other side of Charlottenstrasse away.

Le Meridien Stuttgart usually gets excellent reviews, but is not as
close to the town center (135-295 single, 155-415 double), breakfast
included.

good to know for a meal, but we are students so those accomodations are pretty spicy
    :-)
what do you know of this, it sounds a little too cheap:

what's the price range for that restaurant, since we both like a good meal and the
eating budget is rather large :-) ?

The Wangen part of Stuttgart is on the east side with little of
interest around the Wangen Marktplatz stop of the U-9 which will take
you into central Stuttgart, although the excellent Mercedes Benz museum
is fairly close as is the stadium. Stammheimerstrasse in Zuffenhausen
is to the NW of central Stuttgart and served by the U-15 (must use the
low ((tief)) platform on shared U-bahn lines) which will also take you
to central Stuttgart, but as no address is given, I don't know how
close it is to any of the stops. The small Porsche museum is fairly
close to there. From either place you should be able to be in central
Stuttgart in 15-20 minutes after you board the U-bahn. During the week
there are U-bahns and buses every 10 minutes and 2 S-bahns an hour with
double frequency during rush hour. Of course, the frequency on shared
lines is much greater. Weekend and holiday frequency is slightly less.

As you are talking about over 100 sq. m. (1000 sq. ft.) places, the
prices do seem ridiculously low, even for these more remote places. Not
knowing what you want to do in Stuttgart I only mentioned central area
hotels, the tourist office www.stuttgart-tourist.de lists hotels in
different parts of Stuttgart and in nearby towns. Two of the places I
mentioned in the first post have low rates arfe in central Stuttgart.
You can also try youth hostels:

Jugendherberge Stuttgart which has recently been remodeled and is one
of the finest youth hostels in Germany-
www.jugendherberge-stuttgart.de . It is also fairly central.

Jugendgaestehaus, Internationaler Bund which is also fairly central
www.hostel-stuttgart.de

Both are accessable on the east side of town by the U-15.

Further afield in nearby towns accessable by S-bahn are in Esslingen:
www.studentenhotel-campus.de by the same name

and in Ludwigsburg:
Jugendherberge Ludwigsburg www.jugendherberge-ludwigsburg.de .

Both will require a journey by S-bahn and then by bus. Ludwigsburg is
served by two S-bahn lines and Esslingen by one. Both places are
interesting to see: Ludwigsburg has the largest perfectly preserved
Baroque palace in Germany (Swabian Versailles) which has visitable
rooms, four museums, extensive gardens, and two associated smaller
palaces in a deer park; Esslingen has an excellent well preserved old
town center, some nice remaining town wallsw, and the oldest sekt
(sparkling wine) cellar in Germany.

Main course items are probably in the neighborhood of 18-20 euros
minimum, but entrees, wine, dessert, etc will easily double the bill.
They also have various types of set menus beginning at about 48 euros.
Stuttgart has the third most Michelin starred restaurants in Germany,
so there are plenty of good places to eat, even the airport has a
starred restaurant. Although Der Zauberlehrling isn't starred, it is
our preferred restaurant.

If you want Swabian food in a place with wonderful atmosphere, try the
Schellenturm also in the Bohnenviertel. It is a Weinstube which is
only open in the evenings in a tower of the former city wall which also
once served as a prison. The restaurant on the top floor of the new
"glass cube" art museum on the Schlossplatz is open for lunch and
dinner, the food is good, and has nice views over central Stuttgart.
You don't have to pay admission, just take the elevator up. If you go
there, note the well stocked bar to the left after entering the museum.
I don't know what kind of statement it makes about the museum and its
modern art!!! As Stuttgart is quite cosmopolitan with residents from
180 countries, you have a wide choice of types of food.

A good thing to do when you arrive in Stuttgart is to avail yourself of
all the excellent free information at the tourist office across from
the train station or at the one at the airport. The free maps, etc.
will certainly help you find yourself around, and there is a wealth of
information even on rather obscure things. Also, the people behind the
desks can answer most questions or find a source for the answers for
you. They have publications there such as the Lift magazine that will
assist you in finding the type of nightlife in which you might be
interested.

Bon appetit!!!
