Default Accomodation exchange

Living as I do within an easy train ride of London Paddington, it
strikes me it should be an easy matter to swap my flat for accomodation
in some other holiday destination for a couple of weeks, rather than
renting holiday accomodation and letting my flat stand empty.

There is, of course, the small drawback of having to trust whoever you
swap your flat with not to trash the place but, tbh I have nothing of
value anyway.

Surely there must be websites dedicated to this topic, which allow you
to pre-book your weeks in the sun? As I have air miles to spare I
could even achieve a near free holiday using this approach. Any tips
or thoughts?

We have used HomeLink with good results. http://www.homelink.org/ It does
cost something to join and put your information in their data base. You
then receive a catalog, showing the complete data base.

I also live in London and would be interested in swapping with someone
in another part of Europe for a short break. Will look into it and
post some links.

Can you please let us know if you come up with anything. Thanks.

Lots and lots. Some you pay for, and some have a printed handbook as
well, some are still free. The Channel 4 programme Home from Home has
a website with links and useful background information.
http://www.channel4.co.uk/4homes/ont...ome/index.html
I use the free sites www.holswap.com and www.peopletraveltheworld.com

They all have some useful information about how to plan. The main
thing is to take plenty of time to get to know each other, by email or
by phone, and to make sure you have more or less compatible lifestyles
and expectations and have clearly understood what the exchange does
and doesn't cover (pets? car? cleaner? watering houseplants/garden?).
You should check on the position about your contents insurance as
well, and maybe lock away anything you really want to keep private.

You will need to think about marketing your place a bit - get some
photos done for a web entry, look it up on one of the mapping sites so
you can show people exactly where it is in relation to the places
people might want to visit, transport, shops and services and so on.

The downside is that you have to make sure you leave both places in
the state you would expect to find them, i.e., double cleaning. But
when you're away, it's a great incentive to learn the golden rules of
house cleaning: clean as you go, and don't get it dirty in the first
place.
