Skip the hotels and go to hostals
Madridman 's site is the best, I tried Pension Lopez, very central and cheap
and clean.
Nearby the unfortunate Atocha railway station.

I stayed at the Hostal Rober and enjoyed it. Good location, good price.
Note that a Spanish Hostal is not the same as a hostel. To me it seems
to be the same as a pension in many other countries.

I also enjoyed the Hotel Santander.

We stayed at the Hotel Plaza Mayor when we were there earlier this
year.
The hotel was well located and had some nice rooms (but the cheaper
ones are small and have no view!).
