I've been on one of those flight that hade to make an unscheduled stop
due to excess baggage... It isn't at all fun, especially on a 4 hour
flight.

Let's see... If that airline wasn't the only convenient way to get where
I wanted to go I wouldn't have flown them again because of this incident.
Luckly I have since moved and have other options....

Wouldn't it be lovely to see the captain having them all weighed and
ending up denying boarding to the 30 heaviest ones on safety grounds?

I smell lawsuit!!!

If I were an attorney, I think I'd plan to be there.

On what basis? Denied boarding happens everyday. Call for volunteers,
etc. Precisely the same spiel, same reasons actually.

And BTW in the olden days having the passengers weighed was by no means
uncommon. don't they say the latest USAir crash would have been avoided
if they would have done it?

    > If I were an attorney, I think I'd plan to be there.

Good luck. :-)

no it is 11 tons, Tonnes is a designator for Metric or Long tons as
they used to be called.

Most have the same rules, few apply them the same way at the check in counter.
Note that several airlines will carry golf bags, bicycles, wheelchairs and
probably other stuff at * no charge *, as in not counted towards the total
allowed weight. I'm mostly a lot under 20 kgs, but on the one occaision I
actually have to carry something I don't want to be charged $1000 while the
obese dude with the golf bags gets on at no extra charge.

That said.. at 20 kgs over I would do some checking first of course. I'm
actually more upset at getting charged when just a few kgs over.

Cheers,

The number QF traditionally use is 100Kg per passenger all up
(passenger, checked, and carry on).

Freight depends upon load, but only about 1500kg is sold on a
contractual basis, i.e. guaranteed to fly on the standard -400. The ER
probalby increases that number to more like 10,000Kg.

Actually Southwest Airlines has a far more effective way to deal with
the problem. If you don't fit into one seat, you are going to have to
buy two seats, period.

It wouldn't have helped. The high load move the CG well aft of where
it had been on the previous flights (but both weight, and CG were well
within certification limits). The problem was that due to improper
rigging of the controls, 70% of the down elevator authority had been
lost. You basically end up with an AFT CG, and insufficient control
authority to deal with it.

It is kind of surprising that no one had noticed the loss of down
elevator authority on the previous flights.

Also I kniow this might not apply for USA but rest of the world,
doesn't Warsaw convention states that the airline only have to
gurantee getting you from A to B. not the actual time?

But it was not in order to refuse travel to the heavier passengers.

It was simply to calculate the amount of fuel required.

You really are intolerant towards a large part of the human (and
