You'd notice 10 tonnes all right. It would start with the takeoff
performance being worse than expected. Not dramatically, but it could become
so if you were near the limits already, or if something went wrong.

Climb performance, particularly max altitude would be reduced, but it would
only become evident if you had to climb to the performance limited ceiling.
This happens quite regularly.

Fuel burn would increase quite noticeably. 10 tonnes on a normal -400 long
range sector would give almost 6000 kgs additional burn. That would be
enough on virtually all sectors to mean that you wouldn't have enough, and
would have
to look for a diversion field. Even as little as a couple of tonnes of
unannounced weight would wreak havoc with fuel planning.

You're underestimating the occupancy level of the average 747 and
underestimating my will not to be ripped off. And you're underestimating your
own math-skills, but I'll let that one slide. ;-)

What if all 500 passengers are obese?

What if all 500 passengers decide to jump up and down at the same time? ;-)

What if all 500 passengers drink only red wine and no white?

Customer loyalty would decrease even bloody more noticably if some airline
dares to charge 700 Euros (1000 US$ these days??) for 20 kgs.

Up to the airline: Extra fuel.. customers.. extra fuel.. customers... oh lets
throw a coin. Decisions, decisions..!

What airline were we arguing about again? *I*ll make it a point not to fly
them!!! Promise!! :-)

Well, in US terms, it is 11.
Unclear whether "1" was a typo for "10" or for "11".

Could go either way...

He may not notice it from the handling, but on a trip like LAX-SYD, he
will notice it from the Fuel burn over 4 or 5 hours, in fact it is
likely you'd be making an unscheduled visit to BNE.

Where did you learn quoting? I didn't write any of that.

I think he overestimated his math skills or knowledge of how many kg to
the tonne

JB, you may be able to answer this.

The "allowance" is 20kg per passenger, but what does the airline budget for
every passenger carrying? That is, I know the load and balance sheet handed
to the crew will give the actual weight, but what are calculations done on
prior to getting the data handed over?

Also, for say a LAX-SYD 747 flight, what are the usual weights of passenger
luggage versus freight?

Most airlines seem to have the same rules 1-1,5% of full economy fare.
Here's LH:
Excess baggage
Baggage exceeding the free baggage allowance may be transported as excess
baggage;the charge is 1,5%of the one-way Economy Class fare per kg,or a set
fee for baggage transported on the piece-baggage concept.
I guees you have to avoid almost airlines.
No problem for me as I'm always much below the 20kg allowance and in fact
I've managed to travel round the world with about 6kg checked luggage.
In fact I'm subsidizing those travelling with full allowance as we are
paying the same fare.

Captains decision, a flight is normally calculated from an average passenger
weight but if there's 500 on the way to the obesity conference or so there
are reasons for a decision.
Remove freight and/or luggage, or deny one out of three his flight ?
    > What if all 500 passengers decide to jump up and down at the same time?
;-)
Who knows but I wouldn't like to be onboard. Perhaps it's the same way as
collective suicide but I'm not sure.
    > What if all 500 passengers drink only red wine and no white?
Quite simple, when red wine is finished it's finished ! The rest have the
choice of white and white.

This might happen when the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance
(NAAFA) has their annual convention in Los Angeles on 5-10 August. See
