Default 700 Euros excess baggage ripoff

I got a message from my wife at Frankfurt airport, travelling
to Perth on economy ticket.
She has been charged 700 Euros for 20 kg excess baggage!
This is way more than I have ever been charged.
I checked the website of this airline, and it says the fee per
excess kilogram is 1.5% of the one-way economy fare,
which sounds more reasonable to me. I estimate she has
been charged three times what she should have been.
What chance getting a refund from these bandits, when
you are in different country?

What is the one-way economy fare? The rate of 700 euros implies that it was
2333 euros, which actually does seem plausible.

I think in that situation I would have put on an awful lot of clothes and
stuffed some heavy things into my coat pockets. They only have to be worn
while walking down the jetway into the plane; for 700 euros I could put up
with a few minutes of hassle.

I think your best shot is really before they get the money.

From SAS site:
Excess baggage
Excess baggage charges on SAS flights routes where the Weight Concept
applies are based a percentage (1-1.5%) of the normal economy class fare.
Generally I think most airlines charge the same.
From the same site I can read out that full price economy Frankfurt-Perth is
38842SEK or about Euro 4300 or British Airways Euro 3268 so the 700 euros
charged seem to be more or less according to the normal advertised rules.
sorry for the OP but full price flights are that expensive and as the
luggage rules are clear advertised I think there's little hope for any
refund.

Sadly, the time to have done the research was BEFORE travel.

Exactly.

And stuff lots of heavy things in bags to be kept out of sight. Then transfer
to a 'duty free' bag after check-in to cause less suspicion.

I'd move heaven and hell to get this done free, EVEN when on a company trip on
expenses.

Needless to say, retreat out of sight first and then go to a different
check-in counter.

Cheers,

I think that would be 11 tons. You do the math.

well, if we're talking about morons, 1 tonne wouldn't
hardly be noticed. Now 20 kg * 500 = 10 tonne, which,
by the by is about 3% of the take off weight of the 747.
The pilot MIGHT notice this.

Futhermore, in terms of moronic scenarios, when was the last
time all 500 passengers on an aircraft did ANYTHING the same short
of breath?

the thing is that in theory could happen but in reality hardly ever
does. Like I remember once I was going "with just" a carry on bag.
Whilst the person on the next counter was 10kg over weight. Since I
am not using my allowance they actually have 20kg to spare, but
instead of waiver the fee they still wanted to charge the 10kg
allowance. hence made quite a bit of profit there.

And the problem is...?
By the way, a 747 on a normal 3 class configuration is more like 400 passengers.

I agree. That's a 52kg /115lb bag. They will have to special handle
it everywhere. the purpose of the fee is to keep luggage of that
weight away with an unacceptably high penalty.

As I have posted frequently, I bring back 4-6 32kg boxes from Italy as
excess baggage. If I could get away with 52kg boxes for the same
price(about €75-100 each), I'd have them packed to 52kg. It would
take 2 people instead of one to manage each.

True. Although you can find single-class configs on, for example, Japanese
domestic routes, that have up to 528 seats...
