1 Day in Copenhangen
We'll have a day to explore Copenhagen as tourists before boarding
a cruise ship on May 15. We arrive May 14 at the airport around 3:15. The cruise ship departs on the 15th at 9:00pm in the evening, but we'll probably want to board several hours earlier and have supper. This means, we'll have the better part of a day to explore the city. What do you recommend? We've read somewhere the Tivoli Gardens are only open during the summer. Is this true? Also, does anyone know where the docks are for cruise ships? *** Free account sponsored by SecureIX.com *** *** Encrypt your Internet usage with a free VPN account from http://www.SecureIX.com *** |

Tivoli (http://www.tivoli.dk/) reopens for the season April 12th, so it will be open when you're there. On Sunday (May 14th), they stay open until 11PM. Depending on where you're staying in Copenhagen, I would suggest that you want to get into Copenhagen proper quickly, check into your hotel, and go directly to Tivoli that evening. Tivoli absolutely JUMPS in the evening (I presume you're not going for the rides) and the night is really more for adults than children. (If you've just crossed the Atlantic, however, you're going to be dead-on-your-feet.) See http://web.tampabay.rr.com/mvsrexx/2003SK/DSC00625.html Bring a tripod or other steadying device if you're bringing a camera; you will definitely want good night shots. Admission is only 9-10 US if you're not using the rides. This will leave the bulk of the following day for walking around. Copenhagen is a great city for strolling. If you're feeling REALLYREALLY adventurous, take the train to Roskilde and see the Vikingeskibs Museet. If you go, watch the time and don't miss the boat... You can't go to Copenhagen and not go to see the mermaid, for no other reason than "You can't go to Copenhagen and not go to see the mermaid", but if you are lucky your ship may be leaving from nearby anyway. Other than that, the main interest seems to be Christiansborg and Amalienborg. Taking the canal trip is probably the best thing to do. If it's the sort of thing that interests you you can go to the Viking ships museum in Roskilde, getting to the town (on the train) is easy but it's a bit of a hike from the station and the bus isn't very frequent. I think that this trip is included in the transit day pass (which is probably not cost effective unless you do do a trip like this). I thought that this museum was a bit expensive for the quantity of the exhibits (and if you've been/or are going to the ship museum in Oslo you will be disappointed with Roskilde) > Also, does anyone know where the docks are for cruise ships? Some of them tie up by the Mermaid/Kastellet but I don't know if they all go from there. You might like to stock up in with whatever little snacks/drinks that you might want on your Port trips when on the cruise. However, high you think the prices are here, they are the cheapest that you will see until you get off the ship to go home (compared with Norway, by a very long way). tim [1] and for a few weeks at Christmas |

We're actually flying in from Edinburgh. About that, Sterling Air has nonstop flights from Edinburgh, but on that particular day they increase their normal price by 500%. So we ended up booking on BA through LHR at a reasonable price, about the same as Easyjet, but with baggage transfers while changing planes in London. *** Free account sponsored by SecureIX.com *** *** Encrypt your Internet usage with a free VPN account from http://www.SecureIX.com *** |

We tried to get a reservation for the night train Bergen-Oslo on our way to Trollhattan and were shut out because Bruce Springsteen (damn his eyes) was doing a concert in Oslo the next day and all the overnight spots were already booked. That 2350 train gets in about 0730 and would have given us almost all day to see the Gokstad ship. Because of g.d. Bruce we missed it... (change Arabic number to Roman numeral to email) |

All the cruise ships used to call at Langelinie, but in recent years they have also been using another location a little further away from the city centre (Kronløbsbasinet/Freeport terminal) , so check you travel documentation . But the nicest location is by far the Langelinie: http://www.cruisecopenhagen.com/faq/#1 A couple of usefull links for Copenhagen: http://www.aok.dk/section/english http://www.visitcopenhagen.dk/show.asp?id=1 -- Kristian |

When I was there, Thursday was philharmonic night. The small orchestra was excellent! I also visited the ship museum in Oslo. If you're really interested in Viking ships(yes, I am), you need to visit BOTH. Oslo has the most impressive remains, but Roskilde has a wide variety of copies that actually sail. I don't believe the OP would have time for the combination of train/museum/train, though. -- Mary Loomer Oliver (aka Erilar), philologist, biblioholic medievalist http://www.airstreamcomm.net/~erilarlo |

By the time I commented further down the thread(from my point of view, anyway) on a Roskilde excursion, I had forgotten how much time you had. You certainly have time for it, and if you are interested in Viking ships and expect to see the ships in Oslo, you ought to visit these, too. A ride around the harbor is also particulary nice on a day when you've been walking too much earlier, I discovered. -- Mary Loomer Oliver (aka Erilar), philologist, biblioholic medievalist http://www.airstreamcomm.net/~erilarlo |

Whoever have decided that ? Winter, summer, autumn and spring are generally considered flexible in the Nordic countries and mainly depends on the latitude. The meteorological definition of Spring,Autumn here is when the average temperature have been between 0 and 10 for 7 days. Thus winter is likely to remain in Stockholm now for several weeks despite equinox. And besides second equinox is at September 23 this year. |
