Grenada
Does anyone have any suggestions regarding Grenada. I'm thinking about
using a free ticket to head that way in December or early next year. Any information about beaches, places to stay, transportation, local culture/customs etc etc etc would be greatly appreciated. It looks like a beautiful place. Also, in general, what is everyone's favorite island to "get away?" I mean, no tourist trap, as few cruise ships as humanly possible, and where it is possible to become immersed in local culture without wading through angry/rude tourists? Beautiful, but not the friendliest to tourists outside the tourist areas. That goes to small Statia. >Also, in general, what is everyone's favorite island to "get away?" Please explain what you are looking for in "immersed in local culture." If you really want to get away from it all, I'd recommend Saba, but there may not be much local culture. Oh, I take that back. You want beaches. Saba has none. Don <donwiss at panix.com>. |

I've only stayed at one place in Grenada but I think its great...not a fancy resort but just the right balance between culture an comfort,if you know what I mean. And its on a classic white sand Caribbean beach with the coolest rustic beach bar and resturant. Check it out at: http://www.gembeachresort.com/ Ive been told that it gets booked up during the winter months so don't wait till the last minute if your interested. john |
Re: Grenada
I have never been to Grenada but have a suggestion RE a favorite island to
get away...no cruise ships at all...no touristy tourists...local culture abounds cuz that is all there is....try the Bocas del Toro islands in Panama. There are several islands to pick from to stay on...we stayed on Carenaro at Careening Cay. There are a few tourists there [in fact Careening Cay is owned by expats from Michigan] but most everyone we met was far removed from your typical tourist. Because of this I would suggest that you bone up on your spanish. Although some locals speak a bit of english, most don't...so you will have to communicate thru pantomime! Which is actually ok...we found locals to be very friendly and accomodating. Easy to find a local fisherman willing to take you up the river in their dugout canoe to see gators, monkeys, poisonous snakes. Fun!
