Default Visiting North Island Suggestions

Hello All,
My Wife And I Are Visiting Nz In December, And We Will Be There For 24 Days
(north Island Only). Does Anyone Have Suggestions On What To Do? We Will Be
Camping And Hiking A Lot, But We Do Have A Rental Car. What Towns And
Outdoor Activities Would Some Of You Suggest To Be Must See?

Best Regards,
Don & Staci

The fact that you are limiting your visit to a 24 day North Island
only one is excellent - too many people try to see too much of New
Zealand in too little time. On the negative side - December/January is
the period that New Zealanders take their holidays and add that to all
the visitors from other countries and you will find that things get a
bit crowded during that period, especially lodging. It would be much
better is there was any chance you could do it during February or
March.

That said, there are many opportunities for you to have many great
experiences and memories. If you haven't done so already, get the most
recent edition of Lonely Planet's New Zealand guidebook. Your local
bookstores should have it, but you can purchase via their website. It
will provide you with many insights as well as lodging and food help
and much, much more. Highly recommended. After you have looked
through it, post your specific questions. Any specific recommendations
now from me or anyone else will only be our preferences and more than
likely will not be very helpful for you and your own interests. For
examples, do you have interests in: native animals, museums, geologic
landforms, native plants, scuba exploration, sailing, music, Maori
culture, non-maori history, sport, historic buildings, etc. I think
you see what I'm getting at. You no doubt will have strong or weak
interests in these areas and others, so my or others recommendations
need to know that.

It is a wonderful country with great and friendly people. You will
take home memories for a lifetime. You will want to return for at
least a 24 day visit to South Island. Then you will want to return for
a visit to places you did not get to previously. Then you will want to
return to places and, now, friends you have established previously.
Then you will think about moving there. Don't laugh - it has happened
to many.

We did a figure 8 with Auckland being the middle point. First went to
Bay of Islands, you can spend several days in that area and not see
everything.

Then to Rotorua, plan at least four days here to just get a grab
sample of the area. If you have time to go up to Coromandel add it,
we didn't but everyone says it is a great place to visit. Stop at
Lake Tapo, beautiful volcanic lake area. Seems to be lots of camping
in the area. We then went to Napier, good Art Deco town, but two days
is enough for there.

On down to Wellington, allow several days to explore the Capitol city,
it is small but packs a lot in.

Back up the west coast, and then return to Auckland.

Enjoy, you have twice as much time as we had, so you won't feel rushed
anywhere.
