Default travel from Sydney to Bourke (NSW) by car

we intend to make a short travel to the Outback from Sydney and would like
to go to Bourke - My question is how difficult is the road from Sydney to
Bourke (we wl be there early august) and will be travelling with 2 kids 10
and 6 y. Any recommandation on that itinary welcome.
any idea on accomodation once there (is it useful to book in advance ?) ?

knowing that our intended route is Sydney / brisbane , how to join both with
maximum interests while in route ?

thanks for your advices.

Is it your intention to go by car from Sydney to Bourke and from there to
Brisbane? How many days have you allocated?

The principal hwys are tarred all the way. It's worth taking a diversion to
White Cliffs while you're in the neighbourhood.

Geoff,

In fact our intention is to go from Sydney to Cairns by car - We have 3
full weeks in Australia - My husband wishes to see real outback and it seems
BOURKE is quite attracting him .... ! my opinion is that it is very far away
and perhaps Charters Tower would be a better option to avoid too much
kilometers and way back to Sydney. is it crazy itinary ?

The NSW outback and the bush around CT are quite different....I'm partial to
the former (but then I love deserts). Bourke isn't that much to write home
about in itself - a little run down in places - although the surrounding
countryside is very pretty (the area around Mt. Oxley in particular).
There's a lot of attraction to being "back of Bourke" but don't get hung up
on the phrase. Cobar and Nyngan are also worth a squint. In one of them -
can't remember which - there's a pub with an old style urinal with the
box-and-chain mechanism, and a sign reading (wait for it):

"Urinal is not automatic. Please pull yourself."

(RAB, who didn't have the guts to go out, get the camera, and go back into
the loo)

Personally, I would give Bourke a miss. It is a long drive with very little
to see.

As a matter of interest, I do not consider Bourke part of Outback Australia.

The Outback starts West of there.

Charters Towers is not in the Outback either. It is an old gold mining town
that is still mining gold.

If you are intent on going that way then the best route I have used is:

Sydney, Katoomba, Bathurst, Cowra, Grenfell, West Wyalong, Goolgowi,
Hillston, Cobar, Bourke.

We always stay in caravan parks and I can recommend the one in Bourke which
is about 9 kms North of town on the way to Cunnamulla (Queensland).

Enjoy your stay. e-mail me and I shall show you some of the country we
visited recently.

If you are prepared to miss out Brisbane and the coast (too many damn people
and far too many cars), the route west from Sydney to Cobar, and then north
to Bourke via the Kidman Way would be an interesting one. Nyngan to Bourke
is more direct, but a dead straight road for 200kms, and can be a little
tedious. From Bourke, Cairns is almost due north, via a range of interesting
outback towns in Central Queensland, travelling the Matilda highway. With an
early start, Bourke can be done in a single day from Sydney, especially if
you locate yourself in West Sydney say, at Richmond, for an early start the
next morning - beat the traffic. Hot pie in Dubbo, cool beer at the little
pub at Byrock (Tidy Town winner), then on to Bourke for the first night. A
stop overnight at either Nyngan or Cobar would make for a more relaxing day
first day, though, and its best not to be driving out there in late
afternoon or early evening or you will end up clobbering a few kangaroos and
messing up the paintwork on your rental car. The campground about 8 km past
Bourke is called (I think) Kidmans Camp, and it is in North Bourke, just out
of the main town - certainly the preferred place to stay when in Bourke.
Generally, the further west you go, the rougher and more outback it gets,
but if you are in a rental car, some of the more interesting side roads may
be off limits to you., as they are unsealed and can become impassable after
rain. Outback is a state of mind, as much as anything else and if you travel
further west than Dubbo (great zoo there), then you will have seen more
outback than the vast majority of Sydney people. The road north from Bourke
to Longreach then up to Cairns is outback enough for most people anyway, and
full of interest, but if you have time, there are many diversions and side
routes you can take If the plan is to end up back in Sydney, then Sydney to
Bourke then up to Cairns via central Queendland then back to Sydney via the
coast isn't a bad idea. Outback driving is certainly quicker than taking the
coastal route, and I would take the inland route in preference to the
coastal route every time. Brisbane is just another city, like any other.
Seen one Australian city, seen 'em all - but to really live....well, try
west from Bourke to Wanaaring, a hamburger at the Wanaaring store, then
north to the gate in the dingo fence at Hungerford, and and cool beer at the
Hungerford pub. Now that's living! And Hungerford is dinkum outback.

Email me for more info.

And do yourself a big favour at night, walk away from the lights, give your
eyes 15 minutes to adjust and have a look at the universe - you'll never
forget it!

I hope you don't mean to drive TO Cairns and back again to SYD in three
weeks - that would be ridiculous, especially with children. You can drive
Syd to Cairns in one week, driving all day, every day (500 Km a day),
without detours or sightseeing, But with detours to beaches, two night stays
to relax on the beach etc you would need 2 weeks minimum. Plus you need 3
or 4 days minimum when you get there!!

I enjoyed driving from SYD to Bourke - we did it in one day, the road is now
sealed all the way, although it wasn't when we did it. The 200 Km stretch
of straight road from Nyngan to Bourke is fascinating, as is the wildlife -
but it is definitely not Outback. You need to go further west at least to
Lightning Ridge to get a feel for the Outback. That is a really great way
to drive to QLD.

I see a few messages here have said there's not much to see. It will be
completely different to what you have at home, and day after day of
countryside and small towns will give you an appreciation of the size of
Australia, and perhaps you will fall in love with the bush, the deserts like
Raffi, Mike and myself have.

In the last few months catching up with friends I have driven the coast road
and it is undergoing roadworks with delays all over the place. And it
contains too many people!
If you want to spend a few days gettign to Bourke plan to drive a few
hundred kilometres and stop and see some attractions. Go a little further
north to Coonabarabran (or not so north to Parkes) and take a peek at and
through the telescopes at our magnificent sky.
Your trip may take you along the northern part of the Newell Hwy, and
probably along the Kidman Way.

In central NSW you can reverse diagonal park your car, but better still
watch all the locals do it as they have for years and knock other cars or
take two or three parking spots!

Anyway, here's a few links

The further west you go the less the links.

From Bourke you can go north to Cunnamulla and through outback Queensland.

Someone in a post said you had to go further west than Bourke to Lightning
Ridge to see the outback. Unless it's been moved, Lightning Ridge is 70km
north of Walgett which is itself about 230km EAST of Bourke. A nice
civilised little place it is too.

I hope all the links help. I haven't been online for a while due to constant
travelling but I have spent my time compiling a few links from places I have
worked and visited for varying periods over the last few years.

There are plenty of us here to give you a hand
