Default travel itinerary ideas for Tasmania

Hi,
Half the fun of the holiday is in planning, and my wife and I have already
done lots of reading, web page browsing etc, etc for a planned approx 3
weeks in Tasmania in October this year.

We will be hiring a vehicle, love to do a spot of fishing along the way, and
were wondering if anyone had any itineraries or ideas that may suit

Regards
Trevor

Hi Trveor
i agree with you the planning is halfth fun.
we are going to Tassie ourself. end december 2004 we just don't know on
this moment if we need to rent acar or if the family in Gisborne can give us
a car. we want to stay in cabins, like we did on our previous trips down
under.
so people let the ideas come we will say thousand times thank you.
if some one from Tassie can help us in a way i can bring some Belgian
chocolats, with me( the best in the world).
greetings from Belgium Swagmanneke

Bruny Island is really special - easy to get to and lots of wilderness
areas/beaches.

We visited Tasmania in December 2003 for about 8 days with 2 small
children (6 and 1.5). We took the Spirit of Tasmania from Melbourne to
Devonport which was very enjoyable and allowed us to avoid having to
rent a car in Tasmania (we took my brother's car from Melbourne
instead, which was free!). Sleeping on the ferry was also a treat for
our 6 year old who loved the idea of sleeping on a boat!

With only a week we were a bit limited in what we could do, but we
tried to get to several areas of Tassie. First we went to Freycinet
National Park, and stayed at the Iluka Holiday Centre in Coles Bay,
which is just outside the park entrance. Freycinet is a beautiful park
and the hike to Wineglass Bay is certainly worth the effort. We took a
whole day for this and hiked up to the lookout, down to the bay,
across the peninsula to Hazard's Beach and the back to the carpark.
Including a break for lunch this took us about 7 hours, so a full day
is needed for this. We also did a couple other smaller hikes in the
park which were also great. The Iluka Holiday Centre was nice. We
stayed in one of their "self contained units" which was great for our
family, but they also offer other types of accommodation and camping.

From Freycinet we drove down to Hobart for 3 days and did all the
usual stuff there, including the Salamanca Market on Saturday, and
driving up to the top of Mt Wellington (there was about a 50 mph wind
at the top and the temp was about 3 degrees C at the beginning of
December, so be prepared!). We also drove part of the Huon Trail and
visited the Tahune Airwalk, Hastings Caves, and Thermal Pools. On the
way out of Hobart we stopped at the Cadbury Chocolate Factory for the
tour and free samples (yumm!). In Hobart we stayed at the Blue Hills
Motel in one of their serviced apartments, which was OK but nothing
special. It was within easy walking distance of market area and the
docks though, so we didn't have to drive too much while in Hobart.

After Hobart we drove to Cradle Mountain via Queenstown, which was a
great drive. It basically took the whole day, but was a great drive
and was very scenic. The drive into Rosebery was interesting as it is
a very twisty road on the side of the mountains! We stayed at the
Cradle Mountain Lodge for 2 nights, and the cabin was great. The lodge
is quite pricy, but for a couple nights it wasn't too bad. Their
restaurant is also very good. The hiking in Cradle Mountain Park was
also great. We hiked up to Marion's Lookout, which offers a lovely
view of Cradle Mountain, Dove Lake and Crater Lake. The walk around
Dove Lake is OK, but I would highly recommend the Marion's Lookout
walk as it offers much better views.

After Cradle Mountain we drove back to Devonport to catch the Spirit
of Tasmania back to Melbourne. All in all I think we got a good
overview of Tasmania, and if we were to go back we would probably
spend more time in the national park areas like Freycinet and perhaps
Strahan and the West Coast which we didn't really get to.

Good luck with your trip, I'm sure you will enjoy it!

Cheers,
Brian
