Hi Folks,

We are planning a trip to Tassie next year. We being my wife and I and our
daughter and Australian son-in-law.
We have some ideas, see below and would like any helpful comments about
accommodation and places to see please. We like wine!
1.We plan to use the ferry from Melbourne to Launceston then stay a night in
the Tamar Valley
2. drive down to Freycinet for 2 nights
3. Down to stay near a Vineyard at Dunalley for 2 nights
4. One night near Hobart
5. Across to Strahan - still looking for accommodation
6. Last night at Cradle Mountain.
7. Back to Melbourne on the Ferry

Is the an area that we may miss with this trip please?

Make sure you stop at Lake St Clair on the way up from Hobart to Strahan - absolutely beautiful area with lovely walks, but its worth just a stop to see the views of the lake if thats all you have time for.
You'll go through Queenstown on the way down to Strahan - notice th landscape, very like the surface of the moon, and unlike nothing else on the Island, due to excessive mining.

the Discover Tas site is the main tourism site, and is excellent.

The ferry arrives at Devonport, not Launceston. The Anvers chocolate factory at
Latrobe on the way from Devonport to Launceston is a great place to stop for a
late breakfast after leaving the ferry!

The Coal River valley (near Richmond - about 20 minutes from Hobart) is becoming
a major wine growing area, so you could spend a day here (Meadowbank Wine Centre
and Restaurant very nice), but if you are staying only one night in Hobart you
would not then have time for some other worthwhile areas around Hobart - the
drive to the top of Mt. Wellington, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, a
stroll around the oldest and very picturesque part of the city - Battery Point
and the Salamanca wharf area, Antarctic Adventure (and the Salamanca market on a
Saturday).

You'll miss the Channel area, Bruny Island and the Huon Valley area south of
Hobart, also the northwest coast west of Devonport which has some stunning
scenery, but it is impossible to do all of Tasmania in 8 days.

Remember also that, because Tasmania is mountainous, many of the roads are
winding and narrow so use a map which gives average travel times and respect
their recommendations!

Peter
Just remember that the ferry does not go to Launceston but to
Devonport.
Getting off the ferry could take up to an hour and then you will have
to drive to Launceston. We did it last year December and arrived in
Launceston at 9.30 in the evening. It seems that the first onto the
ferry will be the last off, so you could risk it and see if you can
get on as late as possible in Melbourne.

If you want a bit of pampering and wonderful food try the Franklin
Manor in Strahan----------we stayed there when we were there in
September and it was wonderful-----------not cheap though but worth it
!

As a self-confessed chocoholic my regret is only buying two boxes of Anvers
chockies in April, I should have bought two boxes. (I gave them away.)
Their hazelnut fudge is something else.
