Sydney and Melbourne Guide Book Recommendations

At the beginning of September, I'm going to Australia to visit some friends
in Sydney and, a few weeks later, will fly to Melbourne to spend 4 days
exploring on my own.
I was thinking of getting separate guide books for Sydney and Melbourne
rather than a single books that covers all of Australia -- both because
they're more portable and because I thought that they'd be more detailed. Is
this a reasonable way of doing things? If so, has anyone got any
recommendations? There seem to be loads of publishers, but is it's hard to
tell which I should get.
TIA

Not specifically Melbourne, but I like Lonely Planet, have found them over
the years to be quite accurate, and I like the style. They're based in
Australia, so hopefully their guidebooks for Australian cities should be up
to scratch!
But probably the best thing you can do is go to a bookshop and spend some
time browsing, work out which books you like the best.

I second Daniel's suggestion. We're going in February, and I've got all
of the Lonely Planet Australian state guides (Victoria, NSW, ...).
While the Sydney and Melbourne guides might be enough for you, if you are
planning to get out of town for a bit (which you should certainly do),
then I'd get the NSW and Victoria guides, which also have lots of info
about the respective capitals.
