Default stay in wanaka and other

We are thinking about staying at the Bayview motel in Wanaka for three
nights while skiing. Is anyone familiar with this place? We will ski
Cadrona day 1 to warm up the legs and day 2 at Treble Cone to really
ski.

Also I have pretty much decided to pay the extra and motorcoach from
Queenstown to Milford sound instead of drive because of the length of
the drive and we only have one day.(we will have a rental car) any
suggestions on one carrier over another?

We are traveling the first of August and I have already decided I need
to come back in Spring. I just realized how short the days are this
time of year!

It might be worth looking up flights as it is a short flight compared with
the road trip? mabe one way?
example;
Milford Overflight - from Queenstown
See Milford Sound and Mitre Peak on this best value overflight of Milford
Sound. Your flight takes you over the highest peaks in Fiordland and their
glaciers. View the whole of Milford Sound all the way to the Tasman Sea,
including Mitre Peak and the Bowen and Stirling Falls. Your return flight to
Queenstown is via the world famous Milford Track, Sutherland Falls, Lake Te
Anau and over many mountain lakes and glaciers of the Fiordland National
Park.

Regular daily departuresAdult: $NZ295.00

Waz-
You have no idea how much I would love to do this... howver I am a mere
civil servant married to a wine salesman. .. there will be no NZ$600
trips for us this year. LOVE to but not the solution for us.

Have you changed your itinerary Patty and excluded the North Island
sector?

Wise choice Patty. It *is* a long trip and best left to another
driver! so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the scenary.

A common mistake is made by tacking NZ onto the end of an Australian
tour.
I spent time in Continetal Airlines Sales Office in NZ [yes CO used to
fly down under!]. It surprised me how many were doing just this and
then coming in and trying to change their tickets for a longer stay
once they realised there was so much to do and see.
Sadly in most cases, the tickets were not extendable!

I know people who have done both Islands over a 2-3 week period then
returned twice - once to just do the NI, and another trip to do just
the SI.

Cath,
I wish I could tell you we were being wise and leaving the SI for
another trip. We are not (wise that is). The plan however with the
South Island is to be flexible as to when we get there and how long. We
are now scheduled to:
arrive Christchurch Sunday night
day 1 -power tour Mon AM drive to Queenstown
day2- Queenstown to Milford bus tour
day 3&4 Wanaka skiing
day 5 drive past Franz joseph to Hokitika
day 6 Hokitika to Nelson/Picton area
from there at some point we are heading over to Wellington and want to
stay in Rotunda one night and see the Maori festivals
We leave at 730PM day 10 from Auckland.
So we are pushing it, primarily the first 4 days. Then we are going to
be more spontantious. The overnight advance reservations seems only to
be important in Wanaka. Otherwise it seems like there is a fair amount
of availablitiy and we are going to make them a day in advance as we go
along. We have found a couple of good last minute websites. Serveral
were recommended here. wotif.com is great.
We want to do as much outside activity as possible and will have to see
what happens with the weather. I have my chilli peppers and silks ready
to pack so I am hoping to be fine.
Patty

I am sure we will be back.

Power tour?
Afraid you may find it to be longer than you think!
Two lane roads - one lane each way; not being able to pass due to
heavy traffic in front of you; windy roads with no passing markings on
the road; possibility of ice on roads.

Don't forget you will be driving on the opposite side of the road.
Many rules do not apply in NZ i.e. no turn on red; there's no 4-way
stops; they have round-abouts; road markings re passing are often
different.

Careful - the NZ Police use loads of unmarked cars; also there are
oodles of speed cameras around.

It's Rotorua!

Don't forget, there is a NZ$25 pp departure tax at Auckland Airport
that you must pay before proceeding to the departure lounges. Allow
additional time for this to be done = possiblity of long lines.

Chilli peppers? Are you serious? Patty just in case you're not.
Do NOT take any food products into NZ.
It's an instant $200 fine - and they have doggies at the international
arrival terminals to detect hidden food.

Weather - this might interest you.

Airports, including Auckland have been closed off and on.
If the weather is too rough, the inter-island ferries between Picton
and Wellington don't run.
Believe me having been 'fogged out' several times in NZ, it pays to
have a good travel insurance policy!

BTW sorry, chilli peppers are a type of insulated long sleeved t-shirt
for skiing and long underware, like silks, to keep you warm. As to the
rest of your post, I need to think about it.

Hi Patty.

Yep, we stayed there a few years ago and it is a nice set-up. It is a couple
of kms from the centre of town and is operated by a former Tasmanian guy
called Richard Hutchinson.

Thanks Fozzy,
By the time we actually got around to making reservations they were
tight. We almost secured a room at the Cardrona Hotel but they were
full also. We are now at Edgewater, which is a bit more than we had
intended to spend however it looks nice. We will be skiing Cardrona
Wednesday and Treble Cone Thursday and heading north Friday morning so
I think we are well situated for that plan. Bayview looked like a nice
friendly place... maybe next time.

Queenstown came to a virtual standstill yesterday morning as a blanket
of snow kept most people at home and many skifields closed.

They are having another blast!
