Melbourne is a sporting city and there will be lots on. However, there
are two major events:

1. The Australian Football (Aussie Rules) finals

* Week 1 - Qualifying Finals
4 Matches - Possible Dates: September 3, 4, 5
* Week 2 - Semi-Finals
2 Matches - Possible Dates: September 10, 11, 12
* Week 3 - Preliminary Finals
2 Matches - Possible Dates: September 17, 18
* Week 4 - Grand Final
Possible Date: September 25

If you haven't seen it before, imagine Irish hurling/gaelic football
played with a rugby ball :-) see
http://www.valbec.org.au/acalconf/melb.html and http://afl.com.au/ .
However, I have no idea how you'd get tickets.
Be warned, the Grand Final is a major religious event. Even if you don't
go, Melbourne is a party town that night.

2. Horse-racing; the Caulfield Cup is on Saturday the 16th October. A
great day out with a carnival atmosphere.
http://www.racingvictoria.net.au/calendar/october.htm .

If you're still around on the first Tuesday in November, the Melbourne
Cup is on then.

Cheers, Alan

Too right. The Grand Final Parade isn't one to miss either,
which should be at around the same time as the week between the two
prelim. finals and the Grand Final.

Most of the other sports will be overshadowed by footy so you
may miss them. Footy will be the one to see.. Depending on how much
you'll be bringing with you, tickets to the GF may be a little pricey.
'ave a look at the AFL Website to see if they have any prices listed,
if not the MCG's website at, at http://www.mcg.org.au .

It usually is, but it is a very large, shallow, almost fully land-locked
bay. Consequently, if the wind gets up it can get quite rough very
quickly. However, the swells tend to be broken and choppy rather than
the sort of long rollers the surfies like. For that, if you're down
south, you head to Bell's Beach or Torquay at the eastern end of the
Great Ocean Road.

As others have said, the Australian Football League finals will be the main
thing in September. Cricket and horse racing will crank up in October, along
with the Motorcycle Grand Prix.
