Default speeding ticket in Melborne

Hi,

I sped @ 108 in a 100 highway on my way to Melborne
airport. They are mailing the 3rd reminder asking me
to pay my fine. I was on a rental & I do not live in that
lovely country.

How is other's experience of paying vs not paying the
fines pls?

Tks,

Fred

Shouldn't be a worry at all - provided you never re-enter Australia.

Also Fred.

Did you pay for your rental with a credit card? You may find that they'll
debit your card, which they are entitled to do under the contract, with not
only the cost of the fine but a hefty administration charge on top of that
as well.

I think you'll find that under the hire contract only the rental company can
debit the credit card - not the police.
So they will on-charge parking tickets and the like that are issued to that
vehicles registration number, but a speeding fine is issued to the driver -
not the rental company.
The problem will arise if he ever re-enters through customs, where a
computer check will show outstanding fines, even minor ones. But I'm not an
expert on up to date procedures - you may be right.
Pesonally I would pay up and bury the matter once and for all. It's a
relatively minor fine obviously and not something you would want coming back
to haunt you in future years. Just aint worth it!

I accept what you say - but the other Fred doesn't make it clear as to who
is asking him to pay up! If he's paid cash for his hire, and been refunded
his deposit, then perhaps the car company is billing him. In which case he
may have a problem trying to hire a car again!

When you rented the car, you left a credit card imprint. When you signed the
rental agreement, hidden in the fine print was an authorisation for the
rental company to bill any fines etc to your card; and a further clause by
which you accepted responsibility for any fines etc, no matter who was
driving.

If you don't pay - the rental company will eventually charge the fine
against your credit card with 'administration fees' added on.

Yes, i do know about the fine print. I guess the diff is parking
vs speeding. They can bill the rental company for a parking
violation, but not a speeding one. I doubt they would get
interpol to nail me outside of Australia. But sure it is a good
pt that if I ever get back to Victoria, I could be in big trouble.
It is a falony, technically. I guess I will pay the bill....

Tks for all the comments!

Fred
