Hi,
We plan to travel from Te Anau via Invercargill and the Southern Scenic
Route to Dunedin. However we have been told that a lot of the journey is on
unsealed roads (In Australian terms - corrugated gravel).
We would appreciate any comments please
Thanks
Trevor

There is some gravel, but well under 5% of the total (prolly actually about
2%) and that is well graded. There is less every year as they seal more.

There's about 20-25 km of unsealed gravel road through the Catlins.
The unsealed part is through hills, but it is not mountainous.
Take care and you'll be OK. I've done the drive several times.

Notes:
1. The scenic route from Te Anau to Invercargill via Tuatapere is
sealed all the way.
2. The scenic route from Invercargill to Balclutha via the Catlins is
sealed for all but around 20-24 km of its 172 km length.
3. The main road from Balclutha to Dunedin via the Taieri plain
is sealed.
If you plan to take the coastal route north from the Taieri
river mouth, there was about 9 km of unsealed road to drive
last time I did it.

There is a significant portion of unsealed road!!! If your rental agreement
specifically states 'no unsealed roads' as ours did!!!.............

Yes, do check with the rental company(ies) you're planning to use; a couple
of years ago, at least one was not extending insurance coverage to the
Catlins Coast road - meaning you could still drive on it, but you'd be
liable for the full cost of any damage.
