Default Sailing in Australia / Whitsunday islands

I have heard that the Whitsunday islands are the best place to learn
to sail in Australia - is this true? If so can anyone recommend any of
the Whitsunday sailing schools to me?

I will be arriving in October and have about 5 weeks. Where are the
budget places to stay? Is there anything inportant I should consider?

Any other tips on places to visit and things to do in the area would
be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Tom

Airlie Beach, on the mainland, is the budget place to stay when not on
board a sailing boat -- there must be a dozen or more backpackers'
hostels as well as motels of all price ranges in town. There is a
range of eateries from McDonald's to high-end restaurants). From
Airlie you can get boats to many islands and to the reef, as well as
taking sailing lessons at a number of places. October is, btw, a great
time of year to visit, but be sure to come after Queensland school
holidays end (October 6) to avoid the crowds of locals. By
mid-November the weather may be hotting up a bit, but should otherwise
still be quite good. Enjoy!
