Hi,
This summer (ok, winter 'down under') my family and I wil make a trip
to Australia and since I will travel with my laptop and GPS I wonder
if there's any software that allows tripplanning. For Belgium/Europe I
use Route 66 and I know about MS Autoroute and R66 for Nrth America
but I still have to find any software like that for Australia... any
ideas?? (I'm using W98)
Thanks.
Bye Maurice

GPS can be invaluable out bush, but in Australia, is as irrelevant in
"civilization" as anywhere else in the world 8-)

Auslig or Hema have a multi-disk set of the entire country. Check out
http://www.exploroz.com for the details - it was in their "shop" last time I

I use a marking pen and map!
There are two auslig maps. Do not get the one that allows routes, adding
detials etc. As you layer the maps and get to the fine detail the maps
layers are not properly aligned. The Auslig Raster is much better. I have
not seen the Hema cd, but their paper products are quite good.

Personally, I've always found the local auto club (NRMA, RACQ, RACV etc)
maps more than adequate!!

There are also really fantastic items for sale which help plan travel, they
can be found almost anywhere and are very easy to use. Don't even need any
special knowledge or training. They're called maps :-)

Well, I hope the guy will *also* buy maps. Not very good if you're in
the middle of nowhere and your PC crashes (or you're out of power, or,
...). As you say, GPS is great, but only as an *additional* safety
measure.
I just took my GPS and before the trip I collected the coordinates of
the places we wanted to visit, and I *printed* them (paper hardly ever
crashes :-)). It was nice to have the GPS on the Walker's Crossing track
between Innamincka and Birdville, especially because you can very easily
get lost due to all the criss-cross mining tracks and the 'road signs'
are almost non-existant/missing. With the GPS in bread-crumb mode *and*
keeping a paper log, we could always backtrack if we got lost (provided
the vehicle kept working; had an EPIRB to cover that risk).

the places we wanted to visit, and I *printed* them (paper hardly ever
crashes :-)).
