Step one; you will need to get a temporary registration to move the vehicle
on the road - only to and from a mechanic who will do the repairs and the
safety inspection. Unless you can get someone to tow it or put it on a
trailer. Once you have the safety certificate you will need to take the
vehicle to a Queensland Transport inspection office so that they can verify
vehicle details - VIN #, engine number, seating capacity.
Once that is done you pay your $500 and get new number plates, a
registration label and you are ready for the road.
Have a good stay in Aus.

G'day Zonko,
Not really, just give a mailing address which you know will forward mail
onto you when needed - Registration documents, etc. But best not to make it
too difficult for the public servants and just keep quiet about no fixed
address.

Can't speak for QLD, but the blokes in SA chucked a wobbly when I asked them
to send rego etc. to Canada. They didn't say it couldn't be done, but
couldn't quite figure out how to do it (among other things, we have a six
digit postal code which wouldn't fit the Australian 4 digit field). They
were more than happy to send it along to the local backpackers' (country
SA).
However, they did manage to send me a rego reimbursement cheque in Canada
so it must be possible.
