Quite common in Aus!

I'm partial to Carlton Cold insofar as the generic mass brands go. Coopers
in SA of course. VB in a pinch. Just not XXXX (ugh!)

Remember Aussie drink-drive rules are very strict (0.05), so "rethink your
third drink" as the billboards say. For that, I developed a taste for Hahn
Lite when it's hot - 2.2% and actually tastes like beer, so you can have a
couple and still be "legal!"

I have to second the Hahn Lite. Cold and tasty. Although for fun, I
always have one Tooheys when available.

Do not, under ANY circumstances, drop a beer, it will be ruined.

No!! It's 4.7%. Standard as in standard as opposed to premium in price.

Medium strength beers are categorised as 'Gold' or Mid-Strength - usually
about 3%.

Low strength are called Light (Lite). about 2%.

It's been three years since we were in Australia, and my memory isn't
great anymore. But -- my favorites were Cooper's Stout and Swan Stout.
(You can tell I like micro-brews at home in the U. S. of A.) I'll
also vote for Tooheys Old (? -- something like that). The myth that all
Australian beers are Coors-like (made from mountain spring water, and
indistinguishable from it) should be laid to rest!

Can't speak directly to which beers might be available up in Cairns, but
here's an excellent resource:
http://www.ratebeer.com/Ratings/TopB...p?CountryID=14

Click on the beers in question and you'll get the ABV and other info.

Cheers!

<shivers> Hahn light is almost exactly like the US "lites" - you can drink
it all night, and would have been better off with water - weak, nondescript,
dishwater.

In Australia, bitter beers seem to be more popular than in US, or Britain,
but there's still an abundance of Lagers to enjoy.

If you like a light beer, try Boags light.
If you like a medium-light beer, XXXX gold has great flavour for its class.
If you like medium, definitely try Coopers Pale ale, VB,
If heavy, Coopers sparkling, Hahn Premium, Boags.
Stouts - Sheaf is cheap & good. Dogbolter used to be unique & good, but I
think it's out of production.
