Thank you to all for your replies. You have put my mind at rest.

One other question though....

Where is a the best place in Melbourne to buy an really authentic hat
with corks? (If I'm not wearing one when I get out of the taxi when I
arrive home people might talk)

I am sure the same applies in Melbourne, but in Sydney they are available
from most "Tourist Traps".

You can't buy an *authentic* hat with corks. They are hand-made. Your
best bet would be to find someone wearing one and offer to take it off
their hands.

Well, I have lived in Australia for over 40 years, and I have not seen
one, apart from in comics or cartoons, in all this time!

I've not seen them worn in Australia but there were some people in the stand
at the swimming (sitting with the Aussie Group) at the Olympic Games in
Athens wearing them last week

I think the idea is that you buy a standard leather or felt hat and add the
corks yourself.
Personally, I would just wear the hat without any adornment and apply
aeroguard instead.

Never seen them for sale. The one I have - and use for
childrens' dances - I made myself. I think that is the general go.

There is no such thing as an authentic hat with corks.

Neither are there kangaroos bouncing down the street.

That said, you can probably find a hat in the tourist shops or the Victoria
Market.
