Default Oz summer

What temp can we expect in Jan and Feb, in Perth, Adelaide and Sydney.?
as we want to fit in NZ it looks like we have to go early in the year to
avoid the wet weather, which also takes us into the Oz summer, we hope to
have a month each in both.
TIA

Well in Perth you can expect good beer drinking temperatures - Jan and Feb
are hot and dry - days 28C to 35C (100F), may cool off occasionally to 25
and touching 40 is not uncommon (and 40+ , 105F, does occur) - within a
couple of klics of the coast a westerly sea breeze (the Fremantle Doctor)
usually brings (slight) relief from around midday. Nights rarely drop below
20C. The rare thunderstorm has been known to dump on Perth for an hour or
two late in the afternoon during these months but don't count on more than
one or two (if any) each summer.

Adelaide is very similar - they get Perth's weather three or so days after
us.

Sydney is generally, say 5C, cooller than Perth but significantly more humid
(although not to your tropical level) and thunderstorms are common -
apparently the hail can be a killer.

And I'm sure that you'll fit in NZ quite comfortably - the islands are a
reasonable size -unless you are extremely large I guess.

    :-)

Have a great 2 months.

Perth is at latitude 32 degrees south, and the typical summer weather
pattern is for a High to be sitting for days on end in the Great Australian
Bight, bringing hot air across the continent. Therefore perth gets strong
nor'easters by day, with a sou'wester seabreeze on some days, depending on
the strength of the High. As the system ages, a trough forms down the west
coast, often moving slightly inland, bringing with it a degree of moisture.
It is common for the High to remain in a fairly static position for days on
end (ie well over a week) and when it does move to be replaced by another
High. Hence Perth gets heatwaves that the other capitals never do. The
north west coast of Australia is the area most effected by cyclones - when
they move fown the coast they generally don't go as far south as Perth, but
they do increase our humidity markedly, in a manner similar to the trough
mentioned earlier. Despite the claim by another place, Perth is the
sunshine capital city of Australia. Perth has a Mediterranean (sp ?)
climate - hot dry summers, mild wet winters.

Adelaide is at latitude 35 degrees south When the High system moves on it
may warm up Adelaide for a few days, but they get off lightly by comparison.
Adelaide also has a Medi climate, though not as hot nor as wet in winter,
but certainly cooler in winter.

Sydney is at latitude 34 degrees south, and is cold compared to Perth. It
is a little bit more humid, true, but it does not get the same amount of
energy input. It gets trade winds regularly of the Tasman Sea and has a
mild climate. When the High is sitting in the Bight, it is pushing cool air
onto the east coast.

[When relatives from the bananacoast area of northern NSW have visited Perth
in summer they have found it difficult to cope with our warm weather. I
lived in the Coffs Hbr area for a long time, regularly go back there for
holidays, and it is easy to take compared to a Perth heatwave. And Sydney
does not come near Coffs for either humidity or warmth. Coffs Hbr is at 30
degrees south.]

That's for the coast -

Now, if you're living closer to Parramatta?

I work very close to Parramatta and can report that summer can be unbearably
hot and humid, particularly in late Jan/early Feb. Temps regularly climb
into the mid to high 30's, reaching the low 40's usually several times over
the summer period. There is typically a 3-5 degree difference between the
coast (city) and the rest of Sydney.

And for people visiting Sydney, don't forget to get on a Rivercat and visit
Parramatta. There is a great information centre there showcasing a
fascinating history. Parramatta was founded a few weeks after the landing
of the First Fleet and for a long time was the area in which the gentry
lived. Lots of old (by Australian standards) early settler's houses and
associated museums. Of course, the history of Parramatta goes back way
beyond the white settlers - the Aboriginal history of the area is
fascinating.

Why don't you look up the Australian Bureau of Meterology on
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/
If you click on the required state (Western Australia for Perth, South
Australia for Adelaide and New South Wales for Sydney) and you will be
able to go to the required statistics by finding the entry.

sorry, I should have mentioned that Paddamatta is a few kliks off the coast,
but then so is Kalamunda, Mundaring, Armidale, etc a few kliks off the coast
in WA. Ultimately, each area has much the same the same weather as their
respective capital.
