Default OT but Important: Vegemite in Toronto, Canada?

Apologies for the OT posting, but the situation is becoming desperate
:-(. We acquired a Vegemite addiction in Australia, and used be able
to get it here, in the Loblaws stores. Until very recently, that is,
but, seemingly, no more :-(.

A helpful guy in one of their stores told me that they no longer had a
supplier. Does anyone know of an alternative Vegemite source in
Toronto, please?
Much TIA
Jimmy

Your loblaws manager has discretion to carry a range of products in the
'foreign foods' section if vegemite wasnt moving fast the manager decided
not to carry it. All the stores in this link
http://www.presidentschoice.ca/AboutPC/WhereToBuy.aspx carry vegemite. it
may be as simple as asking the manager of your local store, or trying
another store.
But Vegemite is very expensive compared to Aus, over $3.00Can for the
smallest jar. damn this addiction

I'd agree, normally, but he can't sell it to me if nobody's selling it
to him :-(, I got this from National Importers, in response to my
email to them, asking about Vegemite:
QUOTE
09 February, 2006

Dear Valued Retailer

As you may well know, National Importers has recently discontinued
carrying the Kraft Vegemite 115g jar. Because of the popularity of
the product and questions regarding why it is no longer available in
Canada, we would like to clarify the circumstances of the
discontinuation.

Unfortunately, we were informed last year by Kraft Foods that it was
decided that the business was too small relative to the scale of their
operation to continue in Canada. It was significant for loyal
consumers, some of our retail partners, and ourselves which we made
clear to Kraft. They understood the situation; however, it was not
enough to change the decision at that time. If the situation changes,
National Importers will enthusiastically pursue the opportunity again.

Yours sincerely,
Phil Beringer
Marketing Manager
National Importers
UNQUOTE

So, it seems that Kraft, an American-controlled MultiNational, has
arbitrarily, and doubtless solely for reasons of its own bottom line,
decided that its Canadian subsidiary will not sell a product, made in
Australia, to Canadians - or to anyone else living here, including
Australians.

Am I alone, I wonder, in finding this behaviour to be not only
insensitive & distasteful, but also typically American? Am I alone in
being offended?

I've written to Kraft, to Loblaws, and to Austrade, and will post
replies here. ISTM it's maybe time for a consumer intervention?

Why not email some Australian retailer or Kraft direct to courier a box
directly to you. No harm in asking eh

I'll look at it, thanks; meanwhile, here's what I wrote to Kraft:
QUOTE
I understand, from National Importers, that they have recently
discontinued carrying Vegemite, which, presumably, explains why we
have been unable to buy it in Loblaws here in Toronto.
UNQUOTE
I then asked them to advise whether this was true, and if not, where
we might be able to buy Vegemite. This is what I got in reply:
QUOTE
Thank you for visiting http://www.kraftcanada.com and for your
interest in VEGEMITE Autolyzed Yeast Extract.

I wanted to get back to you in regard to availability of VEGEMITE
Autolyzed Yeast Extract in a store near you. We do sell this product
nationally, however, please understand that the decision to carry
certain products in regional areas is determined by the grocery store.
This is often determined by what tastes or type of products sell best
in these areas.

Again, thanks for contacting us, and I hope you'll continue to enjoy
our products.

Kim McMiller
Associate Director, Consumer Relations
UNQUOTE

This piece of corporate-speak completely fails to answer my question,
which was simple: Where can I buy Vegemite in Toronto?

More later,
Jimmy
