NZ/Oz working holiday visas
Massive change of plans mean that instead of going for 1 month myself and my
girlfriend have decided to go to Australia and New Zealand (and Malaysia on
the way) for a minimum of 6 months instead of the planned one month. This
means that we are going to have to work to pay our way some of the time.
Some questions:
1 - Is it worth getting working holiday visas for both NZ and Australia or
are we better just working in one and thne holidaying in the other? In
other words will it be easier to find jobs in one compared to the other?
2 - When is the best time to apply for an NZ visa as I understand these are
limited in number.
3 - When we do ahve to demonstrate our funds? When we arrive or when we
apply for the visa?
4 - Is it hard to apply yourself or easier to get an agent to do it?
Any other advice would be appreciated.
FWIW we are from the UK and will be arriving in Brisbane and Auckland
leaving the UK in October, the flights are already booked.

Re: NZ/Oz working holiday visas
The OZ immigration web pages are very clear and helpful the telephone line
is premium rate to the High Commission..
When going to the high commission arrive 45 mins before opening. Check that
if a monday it is not an Oz holiday.
Don;'t expect to get a tax refund you will get charged standard rate onn all
Oz earnings. You can only do one job for max 3 months.

Since you can only get each WHV once why not get one & if you really like
the area it gives you a chance to come back later ;-)? - from the point of
view of money you'd probably make more in Aust (hourly rate) than NZ but
Aust tax can be a killer & cost of living higher in major cities.
You could spend three months working & then 6 weeks touring each country.
Just remember that Jan/Feb is peak summer in both countries so Trans Tasman
airfares are high & accommodation in short supply in tourist destinations.
Also take into account the Wet Season in FNQ - if you want to go there it
might be best to do that area first (ie in October).

Thanks for the reply.
Which country will it be easiest to find work in? What sort of work is
available in each?

Depends on you skills.
There are far more jobs in the big cities in Australia than in NZ
but there are more people looking for them.
Australia seems to have a lower unemployment rate.
You can not apply for a working Holiday Visa for NZ in Australia.

Re: NZ/Oz working holiday visas
NZ has the lower unemployment rate, about 1% lower than Australia. Most
holiday visa jobs are in fruit picking, from Jan to May
