Nice areas 1 hour or so up the coast from Sydney

I'm interested in hearing about any areas which recommend themselves
for high quality of life within an hour or so of Sydney. I'm
researching areas to retire in and love Melbourne for the food, but
appreciate Sydney for the weather. Hoping for something temperate
year round but within relative proximity to civilization and big city
resources.... Love to hear some ideas.

Hi
It depends what you're looking for, but you should bear in mind that
Sydneysiders are prepared to drive 10-12 hours to spend their typical
Xmas/January vacation, so 1 hour away can still be 'suburbia'.
If you're looking for small town (vs city) lifestyle, the 'Central
coast' is popular as a retirement/bedroom community 1 hr north of Sydney
(see Gosford), but housing seems to have become as costly as Sydney 2nd
tier suburbs. Train service and roads are generally better than south
of the city (possibly due to voter paybacks?). If you don't mind not
having beaches, west towards theBlue mountains is pleasant though can be
murderously hot in summer. Towards the south, I think you'd have to go
more than 1 hour to find what you're looking for, unless you prefer
larger towns like Woolongong.

Urban sprawl means that "Sydney" stretches for more than an hour over 180
degrees so unless you mean "1 hr from the outskirts of Sydney" you are not
going to get higher quality of life than mere suburbia. IMHO the Central
Coast, for the most part is pure suburbia.

Indeed. Suburbia extends almost all the way from Sydney to Newcastle.
If you want a coastal village feel but still close to big city amenities,
try Nelson Bay and neighbouring towns on Port Stephens. A popular holiday
area in summer but relatively quiet other times. It's a 45 minute drive to
Newcastle, a city of 400,000 with all the associated services of a city that
size, and a bit over two hours to Sydney on the motorway.

Port Macquarie is more than an hour, but will provide everything you
are looking for, has a small town feeling, but has all medical
services of the big city. You might want to try around there as well.
